When stationed at a main terminal, the Supervisor, Mechanical (Car) leads the day‑to‑day operations through unionized staff to ensure railcar inspection, maintenance and repair work is performed safely and efficiently. The role may also include an on‑call component, reporting to remote locations and supervising the maintenance, inspection and repair of railcars and locomotives outside of main terminals. The Supervisor ultimately drives a 24‑7 function to secure availability, reliability and dwell targets, supporting CN’s customer commitments.

Main Responsibilities Safety Orientation, Compliance and Enforcement

Coach and train Mechanical employees on safe and productive work procedures.

Accountable for Online Failure Investigation and follow‑up, including corrective action.

Build safety compliance and improve results through regular efficiency tests, safety walk‑abouts and feedback to subordinates.

Respond to dangerous goods incidents and leaks in a yard; liaise with the Dangerous Goods Officer.

Create and audit standard operating procedures.

Measure safe operation by accidents, incidents and employee injuries.

Spearhead onboarding, training and performance monitoring of new employees and supervisors.

Ensure Performance Monitoring Reporting Compliance (PMRC) targets and objectives are met.

Oversee preventative maintenance plans for yard vehicles and equipment.

Meet audit and compliance requirements, including AAR inspections, chain inspections and equipment certification.

Participate actively in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and follow-up actions.

Participate in the Apprentice Committee and Workplace Location Joint Apprentice Committee (WLJAC).

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Control wrecking response to yard and line outages, coordinating with Transportation, Engineering and direct reports to restore service promptly.

Use CN data to analyze car inspection and repair productivity.





Establish actions to improve fleet reliability and efficient inspection/repair processes.

Maintain teamwork and order among staff, contractors and internal clients, acting with urgency to resolve issues.

Planning and Organizing Workload

Ensure Shift Supervisors use crews effectively by inspecting cars and testing air brakes.

Maintain car inspection and productivity standards to support train arrival and departure per the service plan.

Prioritize repairs to reduce bad‑order counts and dwell times, increasing availability.

Drive freight car fleet reliability measured by bad‑order status, percentage of cars available and initial terminal delay.

Maximize overall utilisation measured by productivity, attendance and labour costs.

Maintain inventory of PPE, parts and other supplies.

General Leadership and Supervision of both Union & Non‑Union Workforce

Communicate company goals and policies to create clear understanding of direction and expectations.

Lead the EPS process: evaluate supervisor and employee performance, review performance ratings and ensure EPS accountability for all reports.

Conduct investigations per collective agreement and collaborate on discipline issues.

Develop and sustain desired employee behaviours through feedback, recognition, reinforcement and coaching.

Administer payroll, time requests and account payable responsibilities.

Pay and authorize invoices.

Working Conditions The Mechanical Shop operates 24/7 in all weather conditions. The Supervisor works rotating shifts (days, afternoons, midnights). The role is critical to ensuring maintenance and repair work on locomotives is performed safely and efficiently.

Requirements Experience





Electrical and Mechanical experience.

Minimum 4 years supervisory experience of both union and non‑union employees.

Minimum 3 years experience in railroad mechanical shopcraft or a comparable position.

Prior experience in a similar role is an asset.

Education / Certification / Designation

High School Diploma.

Valid Driver’s Licence.

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (asset).

Technician or Technologist Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical (asset).

Technical Skills / Knowledge

Time management.

Positive computer skills: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), SRS, SAP, PAP and applications such as RTBI, DataCity, SmartYard.

Comprehensive knowledge of car construction, operation, inspection, repair and mechanical railroad operations measuring rules (Transport Canada, AAR).
