Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Maintenance, this role manages all facets of the operation related to the Transit maintenance department, provides leadership and guidance to the vehicle and facility maintenance staff to ensure vehicles, facilities, terminals and equipment are in optimum condition and serviced to meet customer service expectations and to ensure health and safety standards and regulatory requirements are achieved.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Operational and Consultative Partner: Oversees day-to-day vehicle, facility and equipment maintenance activities. Solves problems and mediates across groups, providing direction in related functions. Establishes policies and procedures aligned with the strategic plan and priorities. Liaises with other departments, transit systems and external agencies. Identifies and corrects system inefficiencies, manages emergencies and maintenance disruptions, and fosters positive labour relations. Provides consultative advice on legal and compliance matters, employee relations and operational planning. Develops programs and procedures in partnership with Human Resources and other business units. Proposes workforce planning,
training needs and compliance initiatives to the Sr. Manager, Maintenance. Interprets regulatory and legal requirements. Develops improvements to support operational and employee needs. Coordinates security for after-hours coverage. May participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee and co-chair H&S; meetings if required.
Staff Supervision: Provides guidance and leadership to maintenance and facilities staff. Ensures regulatory and collective agreement compliance, administers attendance management, maintains training standards, and supports performance documentation and disciplinary actions as needed. Recruits and on-boards staff as required.
Maintenance Quality and Compliance Standards: Oversees repair, cleaning and maintenance of fleet and facilities, ensuring efficiency and vehicle availability. Applies stringent repair standards, monitors performance, and implements changes to improve quality and safety. Investigates maintenance problems and initiates corrective actions. Plans vehicle repair and modification campaigns to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Financial Accountability: Manages annual budgets for vehicles and facilities, prepares reports, tenders and specifications for purchases,
and approves related expenditures. Coordinates operating and capital forecasts and ensures alignment between budget requests and departmental goals.
Education and Selection Criteria
Education: Diploma or degree in administration, maintenance management, business or equivalent work-related experience.
Experience
Minimum 2 years of progressive experience in a public transit maintenance capacity with 5 years supervisory experience.
Other Skills and Assets
Mechanics license (310T) would be a definite asset.
Knowledgeable in the Occupational Health & Safety Act; Highway Traffic Act; Employment Standards Act and other applicable legislation.
Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
Ability to work with deadlines and to lead staff.
Must be willing to be on 24-hour call when required.
