Perth County is recruiting for the position of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Summer Student. The GIS Summer Student will primarily assist in the maintenance and administration of the Corporation's GIS, working on a number of projects to provide a full range of experience and exposure to a busy municipal setting.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create and update data in Esri’s ArcGIS platform.
- Perform quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) on data products.
- Create maps (hardcopy and web-based).
- Execute data requests with third‑party contractors.
- Update County’s municipal addressing and 9‑1‑1 map material.
- Work closely with the GIS Coordinator and other staff in developing enterprise datasets.
- Prepare mapping and reports for ongoing projects and special projects undertaken by various departments.
- Ensure Occupational Health and Safety practices and County of Perth policies and procedures are adhered to; wear required personal protective equipment and report any known hazards or incidents to the immediate supervisor.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) degree or diploma program at a university or community college.
- Knowledge and hands‑on experience with GIS databases and the Esri ArcGIS platform, including ArcGIS Pro,
ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and related configurable apps such as Experience Builder and Survey123.
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle, as travel is required.
- Reliable internet access.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact with County staff.
- Solid organisational and time‑management skills.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and decision‑making ability.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs Program)
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Shift
Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week)
Hourly Rate
$18.73 per hour
