General Purpose

Computing and Communications Services (CCS) is the central IT organization on campus, providing IT infrastructure and technology services to the University of Guelph community. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, the incumbent will work as part of a team to support, implement, and advance the information security program for the University. This includes providing technical support and guidance to a wide range of campus community representatives including faculty, staff, students, and distributed IT staff on campus. The preferred candidate will rely on their judgment, informed by established University and departmental guidelines and processes, to determine a solution or the need for escalation when responding to requests or security incidents.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Supporting, maintaining, and enhancing information security applications, systems, and services
- Responding to information security incidents, including investigation, tracking, and working with stakeholders until final resolution
- Providing advice on technical vulnerabilities and risk, and coordinating vulnerability remediation efforts with system owners and stakeholders
- Reviewing and proactively monitoring the security and risk posture of University systems, networks, technical infrastructure, accounts, and data
- Participating on a wide variety of information security projects
- Developing tools, writing scripts, and automating processes to assist with routine tasks




- Enhancing, streamlining, and improving technology and processes to improve team effectiveness and efficiency
- Collaborating with other CCS teams on information security matters to raise awareness and improve security practices
- Contributing to the Information Security awareness program at the University to help the campus community understand security issues and threats
- Monitoring information security related channels to stay current on recent and emerging attacks, vulnerabilities and overall security trends

Requirements

- An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related field, and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous work experience in a Security Operations Centre
- Knowledge of multiple operating systems and applicable system administration skills (Windows, Linux, etc.)
- Excellent understanding of networking principles including TCP/IP, WANs, LANs, and commonly used Internet protocols such as SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS, SSH, FTP, POP, LDAP, etc.
- Previous experience and understanding of incident response processes, vulnerability analysis, and general security analysis (including log and forensic analysis)
- Previous experience with industry leading security applications, such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)



systems and endpoint protection solutions
- Experience with security testing tools, such as vulnerability scanners, network sniffers, and network mapping tools
- Experience with security event and incident troubleshooting, investigation protocols and escalation processes
- Understanding of the latest attack techniques and counter measures, including the latest malware and threat actor profiles
- Scripting and programming skills in at least one environment or language
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills are a must
- Ability to balance the competing demands of multiple projects and operational requirements
- Ability to work individually and as a member of a high-performance team

Additional Qualifications

- Previous systems administration experience
- Previous experience performing threat and risk assessments, or with the tools and techniques used by ethical hackers
- Previous work experience in higher education
- Familiarity with the information technology needs of a University community and an understanding of the work environments, policies, and governance structures of a University
- Prior experience in supporting users in a large, complex, institutional information technology environment, in the area of information security
