Director, Day Camps & Outdoor Education
Location: Greater Sudbury, ON, Canada
Start Date: May 1, 2026
Salary: $50,000 - $56,000 per year
Hours: 40 per week
Under the leadership of the General Manager, Camping & Youth Leadership, the Director oversees the planning, coordination and delivery of outdoor education and day camp programs in the Sudbury and West Day Camp region, as well as supporting programs in North Bay and at Rotary YMCA Camp Tillicum. The role is responsible for program supervision and development, quality assurance, special events, scheduling, human resource management, meeting financial targets, and staff and volunteer development in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and standards.
What You’ll Do
- Lead strategic development of outdoor education programs to expand year‑round experiential learning opportunities
- Assess current outdoor education offerings, identifying opportunities for modernization, enhancement and new program creation
- Ensure day‑to‑day camp operations are safe, age‑appropriate and rooted in YMCA values
- Manage program supplies (procurement, inventory and storage) to ensure high‑quality programming
- Plan summer day camp programs and schedules in the off‑season to better promote camp activities to families
- Provide training, coaching and development to day camp and outdoor education staff and volunteers
- Support the General Manager in leading and providing guidance to Site Directors in the day‑to‑day camp operations
- Build a robust outdoor education team capable of delivering safe, high‑quality curriculum‑aligned programming
- Coordinate ongoing staff development in outdoor skills, risk management, program planning and implementation, and facilitation techniques
- Assist in development of department budgets
- Schedule staff and volunteers
- Participate in duties manager rotation as required
- Communicate with program participants and internal teams
- Provide leadership to the level of service delivery for the department using Priority Y Way Standards
What You’ll Bring
- College diploma or University degree in Outdoor Recreation, Business, or an equivalent related field
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a senior camp or supervisory position (e.g., Assistant Director, Outdoor Centre Coordinator, Lead Facilitator)
- Solid knowledge of day camp and outdoor education rules, regulations and operations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Valid G‑class driver’s license
- Safe Food Handlers’ certificate
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C
- National Lifeguard Certification (NLS) in good standing an asset
- Current and satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
