What is the project? The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:
A5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM);
Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);
An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.
The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.
What you will do: The
Design Engineering Manager
is responsible for managing and monitoring the design activities of the project through communication and collaboration with different internal and external stakeholders. They will also develop and manage design documentation, audits and inspections including on site.
Concretely, your tasks will be
Manage design activities and processes between different internal stakeholders including engineers, designer, buyers, and project leaders
Review and validate project plans, specifications, and drawings to ensure accuracy and feasibility
Monitor progress and performance of design activities, taking appropriate action when needed
Determine design requirements and specifications in partnership with senior leadership and communicate them to relevant stakeholders, ensuring their proper implementation
Respond to technical questions and issues and provide timely recommendations and resolutions
Develop and manage design documentation and reports used for plans, processes, and initiatives, including presentations, dashboards, and requirements documents
Monitor construction activities through regular site visits to ensure compliance with project requirements
Manage design communication with external partners including consultants,
subcontractors, and the construction team to integrate technical solutions
Collaborate with project managers and cost controllers to monitor design budget usage
Conduct technical audits, inspections, and quality checks on deliverables
Evaluate design change requests and assess cost and schedule impact
Ensure the project’s design aspects meet safety, and environmental requirements
Support the design team by supervising their works and guiding them as necessary
10-15 years of experience in a similar function in large construction projects
Proven experience in maritime works, the nuclear industry or on major infrastructure projects
High capacity to work autonomously with minimal supervision
Ability to communicate with cross-functional and external stakeholders
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills
High detail orientation with the ability to make and propose corrections
Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team

Gross annual salary between 120K and 150K, depending on experience and profile

Extension of the Confederation Line in Ottawa, one of the components of Phase 2 of the city's O-Train system, which includes the design, construction, and financing of 27.5 km of light rail infrastructure. The work also includes 4 kilometers of cut-and-cover tunnels, 20 engineering structures, 16 stations and a light maintenance facility.
