Senior Formulation Chemist

Location: Okotoks, AB

Introduction:

Brunel is currently seeking a Senior Formulation Chemist. This role plays a critical role in advancing this mission by leading the development, optimization, and performance validation of chemical solutions for the oil and gas market—especially those supporting internal flow assurance, pipeline operations, and integrity management. This role identifies market needs, translates them into formulation opportunities, and delivers safe, effective, and commercially viable products that support our client’s growth strategy. This position works closely with operations, sales, business development, and partner companies, to strengthen our client’s competitive advantage through technical expertise, innovation, and collaboration.

Responsibilities:

In alignment with company’s mission, vision, values, and policies, this position is responsible for the following:

Product & Formulation Development

- Research, design, and develop chemical formulations that solve performance challenges in internal pipeline flow, including scale, paraffin, corrosion, emulsion, and water quality management.
- Conduct laboratory testing, performance characterization, and iterative optimization of new and existing products.
- Maintain accurate formulation documentation, test records, and product specifications.
- Ensure formulations align with regulatory, environmental, and safety requirements.
- Maintenance, setup of applicable equipment

Technical Support & Collaboration

- Provide technical guidance to internal teams, including Sales, Operations, and Field Specialists.
- Support troubleshooting and root-cause investigations related to product performance or application issues.
- Prepare technical reports, product performance summaries, and recommendations for internal and customer use.
- Collaborate with Sales and Business Development to translate customer needs into actionable chemical solutions.
- Participate and/or support customer site visits, technical discussions, and field trials when required.




- Willingness to collaborate across product lines outside area of focus and sectors

Testing, Quality, and Validation

- Use appropriate laboratory and analytical techniques to assess formulation performance (e.g., viscosity, corrosion analysis, deposition testing, extraction analysis, scaling loops and other techniques, emulsion tendencies, etc.).
- Collaborate with the Quality team to ensure product consistency and scalability from lab to production.
- Participate in field validation, pilot trials, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

- Introduce new chemistries, methodologies, and testing capabilities to strengthen company competitive position.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory shifts impacting flow assurance and pipeline chemistry.
- Drive the development of scalable, cost-effective chemical solutions aligned with company growth strategy.

Safety & Compliance

- Follow all safety protocols, chemical handling procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Comfortably works with H₂S-containing formulations while strictly adhering to all safety, handling, and technical protocols.
- Conduct work in accordance with internal safety programs and external environmental requirements.
- Support SDS development, product regulatory review support, and hazard assessments.

Key Performance Metrics:

- Development of new formulations aligned with market needs and strategic priorities.
- Product performance validated through laboratory testing, field trials, and customer adoption.
- Turnaround time for formulation development, testing, and adjustments.
- Quality, accuracy,



and completeness of technical documentation.
- Contributions to revenue growth through new or improved chemical products.
- Cross-functional collaboration effectiveness with Sales, Operations, and Leadership.
- Safety performance and adherence to regulatory/compliance standards.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (min), (Master’s or PHD preferred).
- Strong understanding of organic chemistry
- 3–7+ years of experience in formulation chemistry, preferably in oil and gas, industrial chemistry, water treatment, or pipeline integrity.
- Foundational understanding of how the related chemical intermediates and properties react with other chemical, compounds and formulations
- Foundational understanding surfactants
- Strong understanding of flow assurance chemistry (e.g., corrosion inhibitors, demulsifiers, paraffin inhibitors, drag reducers, cleaners).
- Experience with laboratory testing methods and formulation development lifecycle.
- Ability to design experiments, analyze data, and present technical findings.
- Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to translate customer needs into chemical solutions.
- Excellent documentation, organization, and communication skills.
- Resilient and adaptive in a dynamic environment that supports multiple businesses
