The Role
The Inventory Control Manager is accountable for the end-to-end Inventory Control Program, leading strategy, governance, and performance across a complex, multi-site retail and distribution network. This role owns the design and execution of national inventory control frameworks, establishes and enforces compliance standards, and ensures inventory accuracy and financial integrity across over 20 million units.
As a key cross-functional strategist and leader, the Inventory Control Manager influences senior stakeholders, leads a team of inventory professionals, and drives accountability across Retail, Distribution, Finance, and Loss Prevention to identify risks, resolve discrepancies, and continuously improve inventory processes at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Cross-Functional Partnership
- Lead, coach, and develop an Inventory Control team of specialists and coordinators, including performance management and capability building.
- Collaborate with Operations, Supply Chain, Loss Prevention, IT, Merchandising, Allocations, and Finance to drive resolution of root causes and systemic issues.
- Work with Operations and IT to validate and improve system controls, inventory flow logic, and data integrity.
- Influence and contribute to system enhancements and cross-functional initiatives that impact inventory governance and financial integrity.
- Represent Inventory Control as the subject-matter expert and program owner in cross-functional projects.
Program Ownership & Governance
- Own the company-wide Inventory Control Program, including framework, standards, audit components, and performance measurement methodologies.
- Establish and enforce compliance expectations across business departments including cycle counting, transfers, receiving, RTVs, adjustments, shrink controls, general inventory handling, and financial integrity checks.
- Develop and oversee the cycle count program, physical inventory audits, and targeted investigations.
- Drive alignment and accountability with Store Operations, Supply Chain Operations, and Loss Prevention to continuously refine and uphold inventory control standards.
Compliance Measurement & Audit
- Lead and oversee ongoing compliance audits for stores and warehouses against established program standards.
- Identify control gaps, systemic risks, and non-compliance trends using both quantitative and qualitative assessment tools.
- Present insights and influence action by delivering audit results and recommended corrective actions to operational leadership teams.
Inventory Accounting & Financial Integrity
- Ensure that inventory movements, quantities, and adjustments align with inventory accounting principles.
- Partner closely with Finance on month-end reconciliation, shrink, accruals, discrepancy reconciliation, and variance investigations.
- Monitor and evaluate financial impact of transfers, write-offs, markdowns, RTVs, and other movement types.
- Support and lead coordination for internal and external audit requirements related to inventory controls and valuation.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Own inventory control KPIs, including accuracy %, shrink %, cycle count compliance, audit scores, and exception-based reporting.
- Deliver regular (bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly) business performance analyses, highlighting risks, key drivers, and actionable recommendations.
- Build and refine exception reporting (e.g., negative inventory, inventory adjustments, inventory processing compliance) to enable proactive decision-making.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of experience in inventory control, retail finance, inventory accounting, operations, or similar roles within a multi-location retail environment
- Proven experience leading or mentoring teams and driving cross-functional initiatives
- Demonstrated ownership of shrink reduction, process design, and system/reporting improvements
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting principles, cost flows, and financial implications of inventory movements
- Experience working with ERP platforms; experience with POS, Back Office, and WMS platforms an asset
- Advanced analytical capability with proficiency in Excel and reporting/BI tools
- Audit mindset with the ability to identify risks, analyze discrepancies, and provide data-driven recommendations
- Excellent communication, documentation, and governance skills
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and drive alignment across functions
