About the Position

We are looking to fill a replacement for a 1-year contract for a Research Lawyer, Library Services Lead in our Montréal office. Reporting to the Senior Director of Innovation and Knowledge Management, the successful applicant will combine advanced legal research responsibilities with library management duties, serving as a critical resource for legal and business professionals across the firm. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in legal and business research to provide timely legislative updates, conduct complex research, and help legal and business professionals locate and evaluate information sources. In addition, the Research Lawyer will oversee the day-to-day management of the library, supervising staff and collaborating closely with the Senior Director on strategic initiatives and projects.

Primary Responsibilities

Legal Research and Reference Services

- Provide advanced legal, legislative, regulatory, business and policy research assistance on complex questions, drawing upon in-depth knowledge of legal and business research tools, including AI-enabled research tools
- Assist users in finding, evaluating and interpreting information while conveying the importance of source quality, authenticity and accuracy
- Respond to research requests from lawyers at all levels, paralegals, articling and summer students, as well as business professionals,



ensuring timely and accurate delivery of results
- Develop, oversee and distribute customized news summaries, regulatory developments and timely legal updates aligned with specific practice groups and client requirements while respecting licensing and intellectual property limitations
- Provide guidance to lawyers, paralegals and articling students on appropriate, responsible and efficient use of generative AI tools in legal research processes
- Evaluate and assess generative AI legal research tools for accuracy, reliability and suitability for firm use
- Stay current on developments in generative AI technology and its applications in the legal research field
- Maintain and update research-related content on the firm’s intranet, infoDavies

Collection Management and Budgeting

- Oversee collection management activities, including liaising with legal publishers and maintaining awareness of new titles and resources
- Research, analyze, compare and evaluate legal resources for acquisition
- Assess the core list and identify gaps in the collection to meet the needs of local users
- Negotiate and manage contracts for print and electronic subscriptions
- Update and oversee library budget
- Inform users of new acquisitions through promotion and other outreach activities

Staff Supervision and Management

- Supervise two staff members: a librarian and a library technician
- Supervise a library practicum student when applicable
- Delegate and ensure completion of administrative library tasks
- Train staff, oversee their completion of duties and foster a collaborative and high-performing team workplace

Qualifications

- Member of the Québec Bar or graduate degree in librarianship,



both preferred(long and exemplary work experience may be substituted for a graduate degree in librarianship)
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in legal research or a related role
- Significant experience in a large firm or a boutique firm specializing in commercial litigation (preferred)
- Demonstrated experience with legal research databases
- Law library experience preferred
- Demonstrated reference experience preferred
- In-depth knowledge of legal and business research tools, including AI-enabled tools
- Extensive knowledge of Canadian government structures and legislative procedures
- Excellent technical and content analysis skills in legal and legislative research
- Valuable understanding of industry-standard technology
- Ability and willingness to learn to use new tools, new processes and technology
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Strong user-service focus
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated planning, decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French *Our Montréal office represents and delivers services in Québec both to Québec-based clients and to clients that do business in Québec. The incumbent will be required to interact and produce content in both French and English, hence verbal and written proficiency in both languages is required.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision
- Able to work in a demanding and fast-paced environment with competing priorities
