Position Highlights The Stations Maintenance Engineering Division provides operational support and maintenance engineering services for both Generation and Transmission Stations assets. Our group is comprised of 8 teams covering civil, electrical, mechanical, and protection & control and field maintenance engineering disciplines. Whether through maintenance program development, equipment failure analysis, assessment of critical asset health, equipment forced outage response, or a myriad of other duties, our contributions are critical for the secure and reliable operation of BC Hydro's power system while meeting the requirements of system planners, regulators, customers, and other stakeholders.

We currently have opportunity for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join the Generation Electrical Maintenance Engineering team based out of the BC Hydro Edmonds office. As a senior member of the team, you will provide electrical maintenance and technical expertise to BC Hydro Generating Stations and successfully carry out the following duties:

What you’ll do

Engage in the engineering of electrical utility systems and develop specialized expertise in generation station and switchyard equipment maintenance engineering.

Undertake a variety of engineering assignments of considerable complexity.

Participate in the development of equipment maintenance standards, specifications, and cost estimates.

Provide support to ensure equipment meets applicable standards and business requirements.

Approve and accept equipment, and issues Equipment Erection and Test Report Cover Sheets for the CNE process for major equipment replacement or repair.

Engage in technical support of maintenance activities, diagnostics, testing, repairs, failure investigation/analysis, inspections, condition assessments, equipment health rating (EHR) reviews and updates, maintenance program reviews and maintenance instructions.

Prepare reports and effectively communicate findings from inspections or analysis to technical and non-technical staff.

Facilitates or participates in technical meetings involving multi-disciplinary professionals to address complex technical problems.

Assigns work, gives instructions,



provides advice and technical guidance to engineers and technical support staff.

Reviews work of the team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.

Imparts engineering knowledge and encourages the professional development of engineers and technical staff.

Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.

What you bring

A Degree in Electrical Engineering; although other disciplines will be considered based on experience.

Registered or eligible for registration with EGBC as a P.Eng or registered as a P.L.Eng.

A minimum of 8 years experience in the relevant engineering field including considerable electric utility experience.

The position requires specialized knowledge of hydro electric and/or turbo generation equipment and/or high voltage electrical power equipment, so the ideal candidate would have maintenance and/or manufacturing experience in the relevant equipment industry.

Technical knowledge and experience in at least one of the following equipment areas is required: hydroelectric generators, turbo generators, power transformers, reactive equipment, switchgear equipment, rotating generator exciters and brushgear.

Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in maintenance activities including but not limited to visual inspections, testing/commissioning and analysis/evaluation of results in relevant equipment area(s).

Experience in power system design, maintenance, installation, or testing/commissioning of stations equipment are considered assets.

Experience and ability with coordination of multiple projects and management of project resources is desirable.





Solid understanding of related Standards and Codes used in the industry.

Well developed analytical and communication skills (both written and verbal).

Ability to communicate effectively with various internal and external sources for the purposes of gathering and relaying information, resolving issues of concern, etc. Proven ability to work well with crews and peers.

Must be self‑motivated, highly focused and well disciplined.

Must have a valid Class 5: Driver's license.

What else you should know

Key aspects of the switchgear equipment area include MV and HV circuit breakers up to 550kV, HV GIS/GIB, metal clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect switches, station service switchgear and station surge arresters.

Key aspects of the reactive equipment area include HV power transformers/GSU, shunt reactors, CVT/VT/PT, CTs and station service transformers.

Key aspects of the generator equipment area include stator, rotor, governor, excitor, brush gear, cooling system, bearing and braking system.

This is a hybrid position that will require a minimum of 2 days/week in the office. Office days are subject to change.

Majority of work is performed in an office environment. Some travel and time away from home to different areas of the Province will be required.
