Program Overview
Reporting to the Director of Fund Development and Communications, the Marketing and Communications Manager will produce public communications and assist the Director in leading public-facing initiatives that reflect the values and mission of the YWCA. The successful candidate is integral to the development and implementation of a comprehensive long‑term strategy and annual workplan encompassing marketing, fund development and external communications to optimize the expansion of our mission and public profile.
Possessing excellent written and verbal communication skills and extensive knowledge of success factors for fundraising, the Marketing and Communications Manager will manage multiple projects with competing priorities and build strong relationships with fellow staff team members, journalists, partners, community members and donors.
Essential Duties of Position
- Together with the Director of Fund Development and Communications, develop and implement an ambitious Marketing and Communications Plan (the Plan) with annual and long‑term components.
- Achieve the YWCA Halifax’s long‑term philanthropic fundraising objectives including: Fund Development, Annual Giving, Estate/Gift Planning, and special events and campaigns as outlined in the strategic plan.
- Incorporate recommendations from the ‘From the Ground Up Report’ and advocacy strategy from an EDIRA lens.
- Convey recent advances in advocacy efforts, YWCA programming initiatives, philanthropy and impact.
- Advance innovative outcomes for external communications, marketing/promotions and community relations.
- Strategically enhance the YWCA Halifax’s profile and multi‑sectoral reach in the digital space, including social media performance indicators and communication metrics.
- Integrate goals and metrics by which to measure broad sector reach and public awareness, inform strategy, and to apply consistent branding and policies to all facets and programs.
- Articulation, writing and design of digital and print media for programs, events, funding vehicles and participant impact.
- Collaborating on management of the content and design of the YWCA Halifax’s website.
- Producing YWCA Halifax communications materials, including e‑newsletters, program collaterals, community reports or other external reports and marketing materials.
- Participates in communication and marketing ideas, prepares quarterly reporting and evaluates Plan performance outcomes and metrics.
- Conducts media scans for content relevant to YWCA Halifax’s work.
- Manages the YWCA’s public profile, presence and reputation.
- Works collaboratively with the staff team and serves as the agency’s key strategic advisor on communications issues, including media relations and new trends in non‑profit sector public relations, fundraising and marketing.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s or certificate/diploma in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related discipline/training program.
- Minimum five years of relevant experience in non‑profit,
public sector or business communications.
- Understanding of social justice issues and commitment to YWCA’s mission.
- Track record of success in producing high‑quality publications and deliverables (e.g., e‑newsletters, print reports with graphics and infographics, press releases, brochures).
- Excellent skill in writing and editing for many forms of media.
- Demonstrated high‑quality communication production, with a robust understanding of visual identity and experience in graphic design.
- Demonstrated interest and ability to develop relationships with YWCA staff, participants (where appropriate), and the public.
- Ability to adhere to stringent production deadlines.
- Relevant experience in integrated digital and direct marketing concepts.
- Proficiency in content development for social media, as well as emerging trends and strategies for success with social media.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated strategic thinking.
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat).
What You Bring
- Experience in fundraising communications and campaigns.
- Assistant level skills for fund development activities (active listening skills, working with donors or volunteers, soft people skills, etc.).
- Experience in obtaining testimonials and personal quotes and interviews for story‑telling writing for media and promotion.
- Experience working in a non‑profit setting.
- Knowledge of any of the following: philanthropy, the role of non‑profits to community health, giving vehicles (methods and funding structures), business fundraising and professional marketing.
- Experience creating and producing video content for digital marketing (YouTube).
- Experience with data management and customer relationship management systems (CRM) considered an asset.
- Knowledge of MS 365 cloud-based applications.
- Experience with use of WordPress, Mailchimp and CRM software (CanadaHelps considered an asset) to produce deliverables.
