Job Summary
The Specialist, Business Data Analytics is responsible for working on initiatives supporting CN’s vision of transforming Engineering and Railroading through the continuous and expanded use of systems and analytics. The role enables data-driven decision-making by creating and publishing actionable metrics and developing insights via data mining and analytics. The incumbent shapes how the organization employs and uses Engineering Business Systems to drive safety, efficiency and execution. The position develops a framework for data analytics within Systems Engineering in order to provide business insights through the evaluation of traditional and non-traditional data. Moreover, the incumbent works closely with Engineering Technology to support existing analytics tools and develop and automate reports and dashboards. The role remains current on the cutting edge of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Geomatics, and Cloud Based Solutions.
Main Responsibilities
Data Analytics and Modeling
- Direct internal and external stakeholders in the analysis of data and design of data systems
- Develop new business insights through data science and analytics
- Work with external vendors and I&T; counterparts to develop analytics capabilities with key systems and analytics tools
Develop Dashboards and Reports
- Develop dashboards, metrics, and reports to enable data-driven decision making
- Publish and distribute reports through automated means
- Ensure data quality and data integrity in published analytics
- Work with Engineering to collect and develop business requirements
- Present and explain results to Engineering Management and field personnel
- Develop a deep understanding of available data sources quality and reporting
- Organize database of test data and create trend analysis charts and metrics
- Ensure data quality in key systems through audits and Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC)
- Work with CN and Autonomous Track Inspection Technology (ATIP) providers to ensure systems reporting accuracy
- Complete data requests in a timely manner for government agencies such as Transport Canada (TC) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Business Data Analytics Framework
- Develop a framework for data analytics to provide business insights through the evaluation of traditional and non-traditional data
- Oversee data processing efforts to ensure timely identification and correction of issues
- Identify opportunities for process changes and tools to improve data quality and reporting
- Advance data structure requirements for autonomous inspections and reporting
- Develop reporting systems that are aligned with regulatory requirements
- Assist field personnel (e.g. Track Supervisors, Senior Managers) with reports interpretation and oversee accurate and timely reporting
- Develop data architecture expertise of Engineering systems (e.g. Tool Integrated Systems (TIS), ERA, Operational Analytics (OA)
- Communicate findings with all levels of management
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress.
Requirements
Experience
Data Design and Analytics
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Data Design and Analytics
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Business Objects, Systems, Applications and Procedures (SAP) Business Warehouse (BW), and R
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computing Science, Statistics, Business, or equivalent
- Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Advanced analytical and data visualization skills, with strong proficiency in SQL, Microsoft Excel, and enterprise reporting tools such as Power BI and Tableau.
- Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Based Solutions, and Data Science
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Some knowledge of railroad operations and railroad engineering
- Knowledge of Dataiku
- Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
