About the Department
The Engineering Physics program at McMaster University is a dynamic hub where fundamental physics meets innovative engineering design. The program integrates rigorous training in physics, mathematics, and engineering with hands-on experience in advanced technologies such as materials and devices, photonics, biomedical, micro- and nano-systems, nuclear and quantum-enabled technologies. Students develop the skills to analyze, design, and build solutions that address complex challenges in areas spanning energy, computing, advanced materials, and emerging technologies. With a strong emphasis on problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experiential learning, Engineering Physics provides a stimulating environment for its 250 undergraduate and 85 graduate students in a close-knit community.
About the Position
We are welcoming applications for the full-time position of Research Engineer (III). The incumbent will report to Dr. Leyla Soleymani and be responsible for developing and testing a wearable platform for biomarker analysis, collaboration and guiding team members in this area, preparing pitches and reports on this topic,
and collaborating with external industry and government partners related to this project.
The successful candidate will have a strong engineering background in condition-based monitoring in a manufacturing and academic environment, with a demonstrated ability to advance research, direct outcomes, and apply results in industrial settings. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills are also required for this role.
Job Summary
Under general direction, responsible for providing specialized, highly advanced, engineering services in a specific engineering field or discipline to design, develop, and coordinate research or contract projects. Provides significant technical depth and expertise.
Purpose & Key Functions
- Design, fabricate, and assemble equipment and instruments that require the identification, modification, and adaptation of novel engineering techniques.
- Apply specialized knowledge to review, critically appraise, and interpret published literature.
- Conduct standardized research experiments using specialized equipment and instruments.
- Identify, analyze, and solve recent, unique, and complex problems as presented in research contracts and projects.
- Apply standardized engineering principles and methods from a specialized field or discipline to solve problems.
- Collect, evaluate, and analyze data.
- May be required to design and develop computer software required for, but not limited to, data collection, design, modelling, and mathematical and statistical analysis.
- Identify, recommend, and incorporate new approaches and methodologies into research.
- Write sections of scientific reports and papers for inclusion in journal publications and contract reports.
- Format and summarize data and write technical reports based on research findings.
- Develop and deliver technical presentations to engineering colleagues, industry, and contract agencies.
- Provide leadership for a research project or contract by defining and coordinating resource needs, determining priorities to achieve project goals,
and setting schedules that will meet defined deadlines.
- Assign and schedule work to others and review work for technical accuracy and adequacy.
- Provide financial and resource planning and tracking for research projects and contracts.
- Provide advice in a specialized field to colleagues, collaborators, and students.
- Exchanges technical and scientific information with others.
- Liaise with external clients and project partners.
- May be required to perform activities which require dexterity and precision including, but not limited to, the manual calibration of laboratory equipment, and assembly of circuit boards,
- Remain current with frequent advances in a technical field or scientific discipline.
Supervision
- Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers.
- May provide direction to others in how to carry out tasks.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering in a relevant field of study.
- Requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
Assets
- Experience working in a postsecondary institution is considered a strong asset.
- Experience working in industry is considered a strong asset.
- Experience in developing wearable medical devices is considered an asset.

The successful candidate must also have expertise and prior experience in the following:
- MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat
- Solidworks, Python, Mat Lab, and Power BI
Flexibility is required to work occasional evenings, weekends and extended hours to meet the demands of the in-person position.
