Responsibilities
Reporting to the Comptroller, the Accountant will provide hands-on support across core accounting and payroll activities, contributing to accurate financial records, timely reporting, and smooth month-end processes.
Key responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:
- Maintain monthly account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations, and investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Assist Comptroller with maintaining the Company’s general ledger and supporting schedules, including preparing accounting entries related to payroll cost allocations, prepayments, accruals, and other routine and non-routine transactions.
- Prepare and post all journal entries in the ERP system, including managing and updating monthly recurring journal entries.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and related schedules) using established templates, in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP), for review by the Comptroller.
- Actively support and contribute to month-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness,
and adherence to close schedules.
- Assist with year-end financial reporting and audit preparation, including compiling schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor requests.
- Perform payroll clerical functions related to the preparation and processing of bi-weekly payroll, including collecting, reviewing, and validating timecard information.
- Maintain accurate and well-organized financial and payroll documentation in accordance with internal controls and record retention requirements.
- Support the maintenance of internal accounting controls to ensure transactions are processed in accordance with company policies and accounting standards.
- Assist with basic variance analysis and identification of unusual trends or discrepancies for review with the Comptroller.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements within accounting and payroll workflows and support system or documentation enhancements as needed.
- Respond to internal inquiries related to accounting and payroll matters, escalating issues as appropriate.
- Perform other related accounting and administrative duties as required to support the finance function.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Business, Commerce, or a related field of study with a major or specialization in Accounting or Finance
- Professional accounting designation (CPA, or working toward CPA) considered an asset, but not required.
- Minimum 2-4 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in full-cycle or multi-functional accounting.
- Demonstrated experience with general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
- Experience processing or supporting payroll processes in a Canadian environment, including familiarity with timecards and payroll-related reconciliations, is considered a strong asset
- Strong understanding of basic accounting principles and generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP).
- Exposure to audit preparation, year-end processes, or internal controls is considered an asset.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with strong organizational and time-management skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Self-motivated and reliable,
with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively and clearly with colleagues with varying levels of financial acumen.
- Proficiency with accounting software, with the ability to learn or navigate ERP systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, with strong proficiency in Excel.
- Experience supporting a dynamic owner-managed enterprise, considered an asset.
- Professional discretion and proven ability to handle confidential financial and payroll information with integrity.

Compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s level of education, knowledge, and experience pertaining to the role; however, it is expected that the salary range will be between $55,000 - $70,000 annually.
Location & Hours of Work
This position will work on-site, in-office at our Truro, Nova Scotia location to support effective collaboration and timely communication with internal teams and contribute to a well-functioning finance operation. Hours of work will be 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
