About Us
The Department of Geography & Environment’s Human Environments Analysis Laboratory (HEAL) is an interdisciplinary research and training group that specialises in the production, evaluation, synthesis, dissemination, and mobilisation of evidence to support effective policies, programs and skilled practice aimed at creating healthy and vibrant communities. The HEAL mission is to develop and connect highly skilled researchers to create, share, and mobilise knowledge for healthy, thriving communities. The HEAL specialises in community-based participatory research and applications of GIS for urban planning, health geography and public health, with a particular emphasis on child and youth health.
HEAL focuses on research and training issues related to children's geographies, urban health (e.g., physical activity, obesity, food security, substance use, air pollution), urban planning and transportation (e.g., walkability, traffic modelling), and community amenities (e.g., parks, schools, food outlets). The primary goals are twofold: 1) to produce high quality research that has a positive impact on the academy and society; and 2) to develop highly skilled trainees that are prepared for successful careers upon graduation.
Responsibilities
The Human Environments Analysis Lab (HEAL) in the Department of Geography & Environment at Western University is seeking a detail-oriented and highly motivated Research Assistant (GIS Focus) to support ongoing research initiatives related to health, environment, spatial analysis, and data-driven inquiry.
This role is ideal for a graduate student or senior undergraduate with strong analytical skills and an interest in Geographic Information Systems, health geography, epidemiology, spatial data, and interdisciplinary research methods.
The successful candidate will contribute to research activities involving data collection, management, analysis, knowledge mobilization, and project coordination, with a particular emphasis on health systems, population data, and spatially informed health research.
Required Qualifications
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in Geographic Information Science. Geography, Health Sciences, Computer Science, Epidemiology, Data Science, Public Health, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest in GIS, health geography, or population health research.
- Proficiency in GIS and statistics.
- Experience working with research data, including data cleaning and organization.
- Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) and spatial data concepts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and at least one analytical platform such as R, Python, SPSS, or Stata.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with health administrative, survey, or population datasets.
- Knowledge of data privacy, research ethics, and secure data handling.
- Familiarity with dashboard or data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or ArcGIS Dashboards.
- Prior research assistant or lab experience in academic settings.
- Experience supporting systematic reviews, manuscript writing,
or conference abstracts.
