The insurance risk management specialist is responsible for the delivery of financial services, including enterprise risk management and insurance as a primary focus of this position.
What you do
- Provide subject matter expertise on issues related to insurance.
- Identify and assess exposures to legal liability claims and property losses arising from the Authority’s interests in marine terminals, leasehold properties, and other assets including piers, docks, buildings, equipment, utilities, roads, contents and other assets.
- Identify cost of replacing or rebuilding insurable assets, including where such assets are exposed to any weather, water or earth movement peril.
- Identify vulnerability to business interruption resulting from destruction or major damage. Estimate the financial consequences of potential accidental losses. Classify potential losses according to frequency and severity.
- Consider cost/benefit aspects and administrative issues with respect to choice of risk management technique under consultation with brokers, legal department, and other internal experts as necessary.
- Advise departments in the drafting and negotiating of insurance terms for land use agreements, works contracts, and consulting agreements as necessary.
- Participate in negotiation to purchase liability and property insurance policies with brokers and tenants to obtain the appropriate coverage. Maintain a register summarizing these policies.
- Provide property loss information to, and reconcile claims with, insurance adjusters.
Contribute towards the resolution of insured claims resulting from legal action in a team environment with the legal department, outside counsel, brokers, and insurers. Negotiate as needed to appropriately resolve claims.
- Maintain a claim database that tracks incidents, losses, and claims in a timely and accurate basis. Utilize claim information for detailed statistical and operational risk analysis.
- Support VFPA Enterprise Risk Management function and risk assessment process by identifying, evaluating, and reporting on the Authority’s risks.
- Support the deliverables of the Corporate Business Resumption Plan as required.
- Develop and update credit risk guidelines that outline the framework for assessing and mitigating credit risk for tenants and other counterparties.
- Identify, assess, monitor, and report on high-risk tenants and credit risk of top tenants compared to the overall portfolio.
- Perform financial statement analysis and due diligence on tenants and other counter parties to determine their financial capacity to meet lease obligations.
- Provide recommendations on credit risk mitigations through security and/or contractual arrangements.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly pension fund performance reports for the Pension Administrative Board.
- Assist with special projects and other administration activities to ensure deliverables are completed as required.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual Business Plan and operating budget, including insurance expense forecast, Borrowing Plans, and other areas as required.
- Create, maintain, update and improve upon financial models needed to forecast the impact of changes in operations and agreements on corporate financial performance.
What you bring
- A Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in finance, or equivalent.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in risk management, credit analysis including dealing with corporate insurance, specifically negotiating claims and insurance terms.
- Proficient computer skills, especially spreadsheet, are essential.
- A Chartered Professional Accountant and/or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation is an asset.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively and positively with both staff and outside contacts.
- Demonstrated aptitude and ability for tactful and diplomatic negotiation, along with solid analytical abilities.
- Must be a highly motivated and proactive individual with a strong orientation to customer service.
- Must be committed to a philosophy of continuous improvement in all work processes.
