About Us
The Department of Biology is the largest academic unit in the Faculty of Science. Our ~40 full-time faculty members teach close to 70 courses to over 13,000 students annually, host approximately 1,300 majors, and have an average graduate enrollment of 120 - 140 students, supported by close to 30 full-time staff members. The Department is housed in six main buildings (B&GS;, WSC, Collip, NCB, AFAR, and Biotron). We are broadly based in biology research and teaching, as we pursue biological knowledge from the scale of molecules to ecosystems. Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
A Field Assistant in Avian Ecology is needed to assist full-time with graduate student-led research at Long Point Bird Observatory (near Port Rowan, Ontario). Duties include: assisting with data scribing, bird handling,
banding, and tagging (depending on experience), manual radio telemetry, bird observations, and weather observations. Shared accommodation will be provided along with groceries. The Field Assistant is expected to help with various day-to-day chores (house cleaning, shopping, trail maintenance, etc.).
Qualifications:
Education:
- Currently enrolled in a university or college-based program in biology or environmental science
Work experience:
- 1 year of work experience supporting hands-on animal-related or ecological research, preferably in a field setting
Skills, abilities & expertise:
- Class G driver’s license
- Animal Care Training from Western University (preferred)
- Field work in remote settings
- Bird ID and handling (or ability to learn quickly)
- Ability to maintain animal care standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and laws
- Proven attention to detail, organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to maintain accurate records
- Standard first aid and CPR (preferred)
