About this opportunity:
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced Mainframe COBOL Senior Developer to support and enhance business‑critical applications within a large retail banking workplace. This role focuses on the design, development, and maintenance of COBOL‑based solutions on mainframe platforms, supporting both batch and online processing. You will work closely with architects, analysts, integration teams, and operations partners to ensure stable, secure, and efficient delivery of core banking services.
What You’ll Do:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain COBOL applications in a mainframe environment.
- Support batch and online processing using technologies such as CICS and IMS.
- Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Troubleshoot production issues using system logs, dumps, and diagnostic tools.
- Work closely with cross‑functional teams including business analysts, architects, and operations.
- Support enhancements, defect fixes, and modernization initiatives where applicable.
- Participate in code reviews, documentation, and knowledge transfer activities.
- Work within Agile or hybrid delivery environments while supporting production‑critical systems.
What You Bring:
Technical Expertise
- 5+ years of hands‑on COBOL development experience in a mainframe environment.
- Strong expertise in:
- COBOL, JCL, TSO/ISPF
- DB2 (SQL, SPUFI, QMF)
- VSAM and flat file processing
- CICS and/or IMS
- Utilities such as SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities using tools such as Abend‑AID or Fault Analyzer.
- Experience with version control tools (Endevor, Changeman, ISPW, or Git‑based solutions).
Banking & Domain Experience
- Retail banking experience supporting core deposit products and servicing, including:
- Chequing and savings accounts, account opening and maintenance
- Registered products (TFSA, RRSP), including contribution and withdrawal rules
- Term deposits (GICs), renewals, redemptions, and interest handling
- Interest accrual and posting, fees, overdraft, dormancy, and product changes
- Payments and transactions (EFT/ACH, bill payments, transfers, PADs)
- Customer communications such as statements, confirmations, notices, and tax slips
- Risk and compliance considerations (KYC, AML, audit controls, privacy)
- Integration touchpoints with GL, CRM, data warehouses, and digital channels
Soft Skills
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Proven experience handling production‑critical issues.
- Nice to Have
- Experience with Micro Focus or Rocket mainframe tooling.
- Exposure to cloud re‑hosting or modernization initiatives.
- Familiarity with mainframe Dev Ops and automated testing frameworks.
- Experience with MQ, APIs, distributed integrations, or ETL tools.
- Knowledge of modernization practices such as API enablement or code refactoring.
