Overview
Reporting to the Director, Data Strategy, Information Management & Governance, the Analyst is responsible for collecting, validating, and analyzing data related to the financial services industry to produce banking industry reports and benchmarking outputs. The role places a strong emphasis on interpreting industry data, identifying trends, and translating findings into meaningful insights that reflect banking sector activity and developments. The Analyst will actively engage with member banks to support accurate data submissions, clarify context, and ensure reporting remains representative of the industry. The Analyst is also expected to analyze data trends to support briefing notes, publications, and other advocacy-related materials. The role includes applying strong data governance and data quality practices, and maintaining clear documentation of data structures, definitions, and metadata to support transparency and consistency across reporting. Familiarity with business intelligence and data platforms (such as Power BI, Microsoft Fabric or equivalent tools) is required to support report creation.
Description of Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary resource for banking industry benchmarking reports and a secondary resource for supporting advocacy and industry-focused initiatives
- Perform regular updates by working with member banks to collect, validate,
and input data into banking industry databases and benchmarking reports, ensuring reporting is timely and accurate
- Analyze, evaluate, validate, manipulate, and cross-reference data while applying formal data quality rules, controls, and reconciliation processes to ensure accuracy, consistency and completeness of industry reporting
- Interpret financial services data to identify trends, patterns, and developments within the banking industry
- Support the development of briefing notes, publications, and other advocacy‑related materials through data analysis and trend interpretation
- Apply departmental procedures to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and consistency of the data collected
- Co-ordinate and participate in meetings with member banks, as required, to address concerns relating to data quality
- Assist with industry surveys, as required, including supporting development, data collection, and analysis of results
- Provide research and analytical support to cross‑divisional teams, CBA staff, and member banks to support understanding of banking industry trends and current issues
- Maintain and update data dictionaries, metadata definitions, and data catalog entries to ensure transparency, usability, and alignment across benchmarking datasets and industry report
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of data governance frameworks, including standards for data definitions, metadata management, quality controls, and documentation
Key Qualifications, Abilities and Skills
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Economics, Finance,
or a related analytical discipline, with 3–5 years of experience in data analytics and reporting, including hands-on use of BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Microsoft Fabric)
- Experience applying data governance and data quality practices, including validation, reconciliation, and maintaining transparent documentation of data structures, definitions, and metadata
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with a structured approach to data validation, documentation, and reporting consistency
- Exceptional numeracy, quantitative, analytical and research skills including the ability to think critically and present concise and accurate information
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain data insights and work effectively with bank members and stakeholders
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders, as required
- Experience in the financial services industry is preferred; related knowledge such as financial and accounting principles, completion of the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and a working knowledge of French are considered beneficial
