Director, Public Affairs & Advocacy Position Overview

The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) represents the public transit systems and industry partners that move millions of Canadians every day. Public transit plays a central role in Canada's economic growth, climate objectives, housing development, and community mobility.

CUTA is seeking a Director, Public Affairs & Advocacy to support the association's federal advocacy efforts and engagement with national stakeholders on issues affecting Canada's transit sector.

Based in Ottawa and reporting to the President & CEO, the Director will support the development and coordination of CUTA's public affairs and advocacy initiatives. Working closely with internal teams, CUTA members, and external government relations advisors, the Director will help ensure the association's policy priorities are clearly communicated and effectively represented in federal policy discussions.

The role combines policy coordination, stakeholder engagement, and strategic messaging to support CUTA's work with the Government of Canada and national partners.

In this role, you will support CUTA's advocacy efforts to advance stable, long term federal investment in public transit across Canada.

A key priority will be supporting the sector's engagement with the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF) and helping ensure transit agencies and industry partners are well represented in federal policy discussions related to transit infrastructure and investment.

The Director will contribute to policy coordination, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy initiatives that support sustainable and predictable funding for public transit systems across the country.





Your Responsibilities Include Public Affairs & Advocacy

- Support the development and implementation of CUTA's advocacy strategies and public affairs initiatives
- Contribute to advancing CUTA's policy priorities related to federal transit funding and infrastructure investment
- Monitor federal policy developments affecting the transit sector and provide analysis and insights to senior leadership
- Assist with the preparation of policy briefings, advocacy materials, and background documents
- Support engagement with federal officials, government departments, and national stakeholders
- Coordinate with external government relations advisors
- Contribute to federal advocacy initiatives including policy submissions and briefings
- Track legislative and policy developments related to transportation and infrastructure investment

Strategic Messaging & Communications
- Draft key messages, briefing notes, and presentations
- Translate complex policy issues into clear communications
- Align advocacy messaging across internal teams
- Ensure materials are available in English and French

Governance & Member Engagement
- Support engagement with members, committees, and Board of Directors
- Coordinate consultations with stakeholders
- Work with communications, membership, research, and events teams




- Represent CUTA at industry events and policy forums

Coordination of Advocacy Initiatives
- Coordinate advocacy initiatives from planning to implementation
- Manage timelines and deliverables
- Monitor emerging issues affecting the transit sector

Your Ideal Profile
- Bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, communications, public administration, or related field
- 7+ years experience in public affairs, government relations, or policy
- Strong understanding of federal policy environment in Canada
- Experience with government, associations, or national organizations
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Fluency in English and French required
