Job Description
Reporting to the Program Coordinator or designate, the Youth and Family Mental Health and Substance Use Clinician provides client and family centered care through a trauma informed approach and evidence informed practice to individual youth and families affected by serious and persistent mental illness and substance use disorders.
The role involves initial screening, client assessment, treatment recommendations and plans, determining referral needs, case management, and follow up support. The clinician provides individual, group, and family therapy, liaises with community resources for specialised services, and maintains respect for client dignity and maximum client self determination.
Participation in local committees and internal and external case conferences, development and delivery of in services, presentations and training to clients, families and caregivers, and contribution to service efficiency and clinical practice advancement are also key components. Travel between multiple sites may be required, with transportation arrangements meeting Island Health operational requirements.
Full time position (75 bi weekly hours). Availability during core hours 09 00 and required travel as noted.
Qualifications Education, Training and Experience
- Master's Degree in health or human services related field with counselling content from an approved post secondary institution.
- Five (5) years of recent counselling experience with youth where substance use and/or mental health is a major issue.
- Equivalent level of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Eligible for registration with a relevant/applicable professional association.
- Criminal Record Check required.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated understanding of alcohol and drug issues, from misuse to dependency.
- Working knowledge of theories of change, including the Transtheoretical Model, Strength Based/Resiliency, and Recovery.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Empathic, non judgmental, age and gender sensitive service delivery and ability to relate with diverse socio economic and cultural groups.
- Foundation in evidence based counselling modalities: Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused, and Family Counselling.
- Problem solving and ethical decision making skills.
- Engagement of clients through sound judgment, observation, attending skills, tact and empathy.
- Promotion and support of positive change and independence, and participation in productive clinical supervision.
- Ability to work independently, with initiative and limited supervision.
- Facilitation and motivation of sustained learning opportunities and resources, respecting others' needs for ownership of learning outcomes.
- Cooperative multidisciplinary teamwork.
- Establishment and maintenance of relationships based on mutual respect, trust, empathy, and compassion with clients, colleagues, skilled associates, and the community.
- Leadership of projects and colleagues to create a positive environment for change.
- Task prioritisation, planning, evaluation, and adjustment to achieve objectives.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Proficiency with a personal computer and Windows based software.
- Good public relations skills.
Focus on drop in and crisis counselling for youth ages 12-24 and their caregivers, utilizing Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Emotion Focused Family Therapy as the main modalities.
