Duties and Responsibilities:
The following list of duties and responsibilities of the Operating Engineer is not intended to be an allinclusive
list of duties and responsibilities of the job described. Rather they are intended only to describe
the general nature of the job.
Manage operating engineering activities
 Ensures work is completed on a timely basis and meets requirements of TSSA, Safety, Food Safety
and HAACP requirements
 Operate power house (ammonia refrigeration, steam boiler & other) equipment safely &
efficiently and fulfill TSSA requirements & directives as set out by the Chief Operating Engineer
 Perform preventative maintenance tasks on power house & production equipment as required
 Troubleshoot and repair power house & production equipment
 Suggest & implement improvements to process and equipment
 Document work activities in Megamation, log books and shift logs
 Mentor, train and assist recent operating engineers as needed
 Coordinate with contractors as required
 Assist in maintaining accurate inventory
 Participate as active member of E2 Emergency Response Team (training, meetings, practice drills,
materials & documentation)
 Support Wastewater systems and treatment – wastewater shift checks, respond to wastewater
alarms and system failures, provide coverage of wastewater operations during unmanned and
vacation periods
 Other duties as directed by the Engineering & Maintenance Manager or Chief Operating Engineer

Maintenance & Operation of Equipment
 Ammonia and Freon Refrigeration equipment (compressors, vessels, controls, evaporators,
rooftop units, cooling towers, condensers, water chiller, glycol chiller, piping, safeties, etc.)




 Steam boiler
 Thermal fluid boiler
 Hot water heaters and high pressure pumps
 Various Rooftop Units and HVAC equipment
 Air compressors
 Hydraulic power packs and associated systems
 Water filters and boosters
 Computerized Building Control Systems
 Wastewater systems
 Some production equipment – e.g. twin spiral oven and spiral freezer
Assist Maintenance Department and Overall Facilities Maintenance
 Coordinate with Maintenance Supervisor and technicians to accomplish Maintenance tasks and
work orders
 Assist in developing and implementing a sustainable and practical preventive maintenance
program for powerhouse, facility and production equipment
 Assist in organization of and improvements to maintenance and engineering inventory systems
and process

Qualifications Required:
 Minimum 3 years experience in operating engineering in a manufacturing or process setting –
robust ammonia refrigeration and steam boiler systems experience is necessary
 3rd Class Operating Engineer ticket OR B-Class refrigeration ticket + 4th Class operating engineer
ticket
 Proven track record of successfully maintaining a power plant and associated systems
 Proven track record of leading a team of similarly qualified engineers and technicians
 Red Seal ticket in Millwright, Electrician or other trade tickets an asset

Working Conditions
 Must be able to work in a fast-paced, team environment
 Must be able to work in refrigerated (production plant) and hot (powerhouse, oven areas)
environments
 Must be flexible to work day, afternoon, night, weekend, holiday and rotating shifts as required
