Your New Job
As a Litigation Legal Assistant, you will support a busy group of litigation lawyers and clerks working on sophisticated civil litigation, including class actions. Typically, you will support 3–4 litigation professionals, depending on workflow and file volume.
This is an opportunity to be deeply involved in substantive litigation work while working alongside experienced lawyers, clerks, and fellow assistants in a highly organized, professional environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drafting routine correspondence and litigation documents using established precedents
- Preparing pleadings, affidavits, motion records, exhibits, Schedule A lists, and cost outlines
- Preparing and commissioning affidavits, including affidavits of service
- Coordinating service and filing of documents with process servers and courts
- Filing documents in the Ontario Superior Court, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal, Federal Court, and British Columbia courts (including CaseLines)
- Booking motions, applications, hearings, discoveries, mediations,
and client meetings
- Managing calendars and litigation deadlines
- Organizing and maintaining electronic and physical files using a document management system (iManage)
- Assisting with administrative tasks such as opening/closing files, docketing, scanning, and preparing accounts
This position is in office two days per week.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
You will thrive in this role if you bring:
- At least 3 years of civil litigation legal assistant experience (class action experience is a strong asset)
- Solid knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure
- Experience with Ontario court filing, including CaseLines
- Familiarity with e‑Discovery procedures
- A Legal Assistant or Law Clerk certificate/diploma from a recognized program
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Excellent attention to detail and follow‑through
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Experience working with a Document Management System
- Professional communication skills and confidence liaising with lawyers, clients, court staff, and external parties
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently
