Project Manager – Applied Research

Reporting to the Director, Applied Research, the Project Manager leads and coordinates research projects throughout their lifecycle, ensuring alignment with the College’s strategic and academic priorities.

Responsibilities

- Identify and develop applied research opportunities in collaboration with faculty and external partners, ensuring alignment with the College’s strategic priorities.
- Facilitate early‑stage discussions to shape concepts into viable applied research projects.
- Align partner needs with faculty expertise, institutional strengths, and funding opportunities.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define project objectives and requirements, and complete all required project‑management documentation.
- Develop and write project proposals, defining scope, timelines, deliverables, and resource requirements.
- Organize, manage, prioritize, and oversee all project deliverables.
- Manage team completion of project work and resolve resource‑allocation conflicts.
- Ensure project objectives align with the College’s strategic goals.
- Assess and manage risks and issues, following appropriate escalation procedures.
- Ensure project deliverables meet quality and customer‑service standards, and follow appropriate approval processes.
- Engage in contingency planning, recommend and implement solutions when needed.
- Maintain detailed project records and share information as necessary.
- Conduct regular status meetings to manage the project work and keep the schedule on track.
- Provide professional project‑management leadership.
- Communicate project objectives, requirements, deliverables, dependencies, and timelines to stakeholders and team members.
- Provide progress updates to governance committees and keep key stakeholders informed.
- Advise, provide solutions to issues and risks,



and ensure consistent status reporting.
- Coordinate and manage external resources and vendors as required.
- Engage faculty and external partners to identify emerging research needs and opportunities.
- Oversee key milestones for roll‑out, change management, communication, and training requirements.

Qualifications

- Minimum four‑year degree in Science, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, Technology, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
- Minimum seven years of experience, including:
- At least five years of project‑management experience delivering quality outcomes within scope, time, and cost.
- Experience leading applied research projects.
- Experience leading teams and managing deliverables in a matrix environment.
- Experience presenting to upper management and senior executives.

- Nice to have: Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP).

Additional Requirements

- Research Administration experience.
- Demonstrated project/program management capability.
- Excellent communication skills at multiple levels of the College hierarchy.
- Strong facilitation, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Results‑driven and self‑motivated.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Customer focus with solid analytical skills.
- Excellent leadership, motivational, and conflict‑resolution skills.

Work Arrangements

The position is eligible for hybrid work, requiring three days per week on‑site at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe (Ottawa) Campus, in conjunction with the College’s Flexible Work Arrangement Policy.
