Overview

The Department of Psychiatry in Nanaimo is seeking a part time General Psychiatrist to provide services with the Complex Care Housing (CCH) Team. The successful candidate will be a member of and work collaboratively with other members of the CCH team. The position involves providing psychiatric services for at least 44 weeks per year, averaging about 7.5 hours per week (approximately 330 hours per year), equivalent to 0.2 FTEs based on 1680 minimum hours per FTE. The number of hours may vary weekly, but the schedule should ensure continuity of psychiatric care for the CCH patients during the year.

The patient population will be based in Nanaimo, with up to 30 adult patients who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, including individuals with moderate to severe mental health concerns, substance use, or chronic medical co-morbidities; behavior problems, violence, hoarding, etc. Major goals include psychiatric and medical stabilization and supporting individuals to maintain housing.

Responsibilities

- Provide psychiatric services within a community-based in-reach team, in collaboration with other physicians and health professionals (e.g., addiction medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers, and nurses).
- Conduct psychiatric assessment, case formulation, and medication management for patients with a full range of psychiatric disorders and comorbidities,



including severe substance use disorders.
- Deliver services on-site in Island Health facilities or Nanaimo community supportive housing sites, with collaboration from external community agencies and stakeholders.
- Attend departmental and multidisciplinary meetings as part of administrative duties.
- Participate in training of medical students and residents; applying for a clinical appointment is required due to Island Health being part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Island Medical Program.
- On-call responsibility is mandatory for Island Health Psychiatrists under a Departmental MOCAP contract, averaging one weekend day every 4–6 weeks.

Qualifications

- Eligibility to practice as a General Psychiatrist (as required for Island Health appointments).
- Experience or ability to work with adults who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity and with complex psychiatric and medical comorbidities.
- Willingness to participate in the teaching of medical students and residents; applying for a clinical appointment is required.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, community-based setting and to coordinate care with external agencies.
