Job Summary
As the Director, Tax Credits, you will be responsible for the delivery and quality of all aspects of MCN SR&ED; and IDMTC client engagements, oversee CRA relationships, and play an active role in business development and client retention. You will lead and develop a diverse team of consultants helping MCN clients navigate the multitude of government incentive programs and funding opportunities. As a competent and trusted advisor, you will help MCN clients identify and structure eligible projects and deliver customized tax strategies within a complex and dynamic regulatory framework.
Key Responsibilities
Client Engagements & Quality Assurance
- Lead the delivery of all MCN SR&ED; and IDMTC client engagements, maintaining high standards of accuracy, comprehensiveness, and timeliness to ensure client satisfaction and retention.
- Review SR&ED; and IDMTC claims in the context of clients’ financial statements, T2 tax returns, and other relevant financial and business information to maximize eligible credits while ensuring the quality and defensibility of every claim.
- Supervise the preparation of SR&ED; and IDMTC claims by MCN personnel, and review all deliverables prior to release to clients.
- Personally engage in preparation of SR&ED; and IDMTC claims where needed, and provide strategic guidance on complex or high-value engagements.
- Oversee project management across the team, including delivery timelines, CRA claim tracking, and internal coordination to keep engagements on schedule.
CRA Relations & Regulatory Knowledge
- Serve as the primary liaison with the CRA and oversee CRA audits related to SR&ED; and IDMTC claims, including dispute resolution and correspondence with tax authorities.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the SR&ED; program and all IDMTC programs, including relevant legislation, application policies, case law, and CRA administrative practices.
- Monitor regulatory and policy changes and ensure that MCN internal processes, methodologies, and training materials are updated accordingly.
- Guide the team in understanding all aspects of SR&ED; and IDMTC policies and administration, with particular focus on financial and tax matters.
- Manage team workloads, set clear performance targets, and conduct regular reviews and feedback sessions to support employee growth, satisfaction, and retention.
- Recruit, onboard, and train new team members; invest in their professional development and create a high-performance, collaborative culture.
Client Relationships & Business Development
- Personally engage in account management for key clients, including proactive relationship-building, strategic advice, and contract renewals to drive long-term retention.
- Identify, engage and maintain relationships with clients and prospects. Examine clients' and prospects' operations, determine their eligibility for various tax credits and funding programs, and develop customized strategies to maximize tax incentives available to them.
- Support the business development team in closing new client engagements, leveraging financial, tax and regulatory expertise to build prospect confidence.
- Assist the MCN business development team in building and nurturing channel relationships with accountants, VCs, CxO networks, and other referral partners to generate a steady stream of qualified leads.
Internal Operations & Process
- Design, document, and maintain internal processes, workflows, and training materials to ensure operational consistency and scalability.
- Develop and update company policies in line with regulatory changes and organizational needs.
Qualifications
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, accounting,
or a related field.
- CPA designation is preferred. Completion of the CRA In-Depth Tax program or other tax specialist designations or courses are an asset.
Experience
- Extensive hands-on experience with the SR&ED; tax credit program and IDMTC programs, including preparing and defending claims in software, computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics, and related fields.
- Minimum 3 years of experience managing cross-functional teams in an accounting or consulting environment, with a demonstrated track record of developing and retaining high-performing staff.
- Proven experience managing CRA’s SR&ED; audits and acting as a liaison with tax authorities.
- Demonstrated experience in client-facing roles, including strategic advisory and client retention.
- Experience in business development, including supporting deal closure, managing referral relationships, and engaging with prospective clients at the executive level.
- Familiarity with IRAP and other government grant programs is an asset.
- Prior experience as an RTM, FM, RTA, or FR at the CRA is a strong asset.
- Up-to-date knowledge of SR&ED; and IDMTC programs, including legislation, application policies, case law, and CRA administrative practices.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex regulatory and financial concepts clearly to clients at all levels.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent engagements and competing priorities.
- Intellectual curiosity and creative problem-solving ability in a complex, dynamic regulatory environment.
