Job Title: Head Coach, Men’s Hockey
Overview
The Head Coach, Men’s Hockey is responsible for the leadership, development, and administration of the University’s Men’s Hockey program, competing within Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS. The role emphasizes high-performance coaching, student-athlete development, academic achievement, and community engagement.
Duties And Responsibilities
The Head Coach will lead a high-performance varsity program and develop training programs, recruit student-athletes, and collaborate with Athletics staff to support well-being and development.
- Provide leadership and direction for all aspects of the Men’s Hockey program.
- Plan and deliver training sessions, tactical preparation, and game strategies.
- Lead team preparation for OUA and U SPORTS competition.
- Utilize video analysis, analytics, and performance metrics to evaluate team and individual performance.
- Foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and respect within the program.
Recruitment and Student-Athlete Development
- Identify, recruit, and retain high-quality student-athletes capable of succeeding academically and athletically.
- Build and maintain strong recruiting networks within junior, club, and elite hockey systems.
- Support student-athlete academic success and personal development in collaboration with academic support staff.
- Promote leadership, character development, and life skills among student-athletes.
Program Administration and Operations
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Men’s Hockey program, including scheduling, travel, budgeting, and equipment.
- Coordinate practice and competition schedules in collaboration with Athletics operations staff.
- Maintain accurate records related to recruitment, eligibility, and team operations.
- Ensure compliance with all U SPORTS, OUA, and institutional policies and regulations.
Athlete Welfare and Safe Sport
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful team environment.
- Support student-athlete health, safety, and well-being in collaboration with Athletic Therapy and Strength & Conditioning staff.
- Ensure adherence to Safe Sport, equity, and harassment prevention policies.
Youth Development and Community Engagement
- Coordinate and manage the Junior Ravens youth hockey initiatives and summer camp programming.
- Develop and deliver instructional hockey camps focused on skill development and community participation.
- Recruit and supervise camp staff including assistant coaches, varsity athletes, and student staff.
- Collaborate with Athletics staff on marketing, registration, and promotion of youth programming.
- Utilize camps and youth programming to strengthen community engagement and support the visibility of the varsity program.
Alumni, Community and Department Engagement
- Represent the Men’s Hockey program within the university and the broader hockey community.
- Engage alumni, supporters, and community partners to strengthen program visibility and support.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives including events, fundraising, and community outreach programs.
Qualifications
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of hockey performance analysis, training methodologies, and athlete development pathways.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an integrated high-performance support team.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred in sport management, kinesiology, education, or a related field.
- Minimum 5–10 years of competitive hockey coaching experience at the Junior, University, skilled, or equivalent high-performance level.
- Demonstrated experience in athlete development, program planning, and team leadership within a competitive environment.
- Experience with recruitment and talent identification, particularly within Canadian junior hockey pathways and/or University systems.
- Proven ability to lead or contribute within a high-performance coaching staff, collaborating with strength & conditioning, athletic therapy, and performance support personnel.
- Previous Head Coaching experience or significant senior Assistant Coach experience at the Junior A, Major Junior, University, or professional level is strongly preferred.
