Inspectors must be leaders and skilled communicators who can work with clients, adapt to diverse needs, and manage risk. Inspections involve responsibility and accountability with potential impact on public safety.

Mission : To maintain and enhance safety and the protection of life, health, property and the marine environment through: (a) developing, maintaining and implementing an effective regulatory regime; (b) education and awareness; (c) monitoring and enforcement.

Education :

- Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in naval architecture

Experience :

- Experience normally acquired over FIVE (5) consecutive years in one or more of the following areas: marine ship design, construction, repairs, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine-related areas; and/or experience in technical or operational management of ships.

Knowledge :

- Knowledge of Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and related regulations; knowledge of international maritime legislation including conventions.

Abilities :

- Effective oral and written communication; ability to analyze technical matters and resolve operational problems; ability to work under stress with multiple priorities and tight deadlines.

Language requirements (essential for the job)

Experience :

- Experience as a master or chief engineer on vessels; experience as an employer representative or health and safety committee member/representative under Canada Labour Code Part II or provincial equivalents; experience in safety management systems and quality assurance programs; experience as a port captain, independent surveyor or surveyor for classification societies; experience in design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or small vessels; experience in managing large technical projects; experience as a vessel superintendent.

Knowledge :

- Specialized knowledge/operations in tankers, LNG, TDG, cargo handling; knowledge of the area of operation.
