The Registered Nurse (RN) - Heart Rhythm Device provides expert device interrogation and patient assessment focusing on ICD and pacemaker related issues, complications, and interventions. The RN reviews information stored in the device and follows up with the appropriate health care provider as required. Assessment is comprehensive, thorough and requires a background in cardiology. Assessment includes a review of medications and test results which have an impact on heart function and cardiac rhythm. The RN also has a significant role in patient education both prior to and after implant. Device teaching occurs in collaboration with the patient, the inter-professional health care team and other care providers. In addition, the Registered Nurse provides assistance with pacemaker/ICD insertions in the Operating Room and the Electrophysiology lab as well as reprogramming of devices throughout the Stollery Children’s Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit,
the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.
4 years recent experience in Heart Rhythm Device clinic with preference given to those who are ward & OR trained. Strong understanding of electrophysiology and cardiac devices, an exam may be written during the interview. Must demonstrate excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, communication, problem solving, conflict management organization, and patient care skills. Must be able to wear a lead apron. Must be physically able to transport patients and equipment. Long periods of standing or walking may be required. Basic computer skills are essential. Completion of an approved Critical Care Course is required. Three years current (within the last 2 years) CCU/CICU/CVICU/Cardiac Cath Lab experience required). Robust understanding of adult teaching principles preferred. Experience with cardiac devices and/or Electrophysiology studies preferred. Experience and proficiency with rhythm analysis.
