The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is one of 2 Tertiary Trauma Centers in the City of Edmonton and is one of Alberta’s largest and longest serving hospitals. Located in Edmonton’s downtown core, the RAH serves a diverse community, including some of our province’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations. PCU 31 is a 24 bed unit providing care to thoracic and general surgery patients. PCU 31 also features 8 surgical observation beds that require extra training for registered nurses on the unit. Unit 31 serves the northern region for thoracic and trauma patients. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. This unit offers a unique, employer-paid learning opportunity for RNs to receive specialized "obs training" in the management of trauma patients, enhancing their nursing skillsets while contributing to delivery of meaningful patient care outcomes. We are seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) with exceptional clinical and critical thinking skills and the adaptability and enthusiasm to excel in our Acute Surgical Unit. RNs in this area are responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family care in accordance with the RAH and AHS policies and procedures. We implement Care Hub nursing on all shifts with RNs, licensed practical nurses and health care aids working collaboratively to their full scope of practice. This RN position will require you to perform moderate to heavy work on a regular basis to ensure safe patient care and safety of unit staff.



All staff are required to assist with mobilization of patients with a variety of ambulation needs. The expectation is to direct and monitor the care provided by health care aids and support your LPN peers as well as take on the responsibility of charge nurse as required.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program.



Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. This job is physically demanding, the incumbent will be required to assist with lifting, turning, and mobilizing patients as well as other physical tasks. Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills. Demonstrated reliability. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team workplace. Basic computer skills. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line, supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. Preference given to nurses with cardiac monitoring and invasive pressure monitoring experience.

Two years charge nurse experience is preferred. Two years previous of surgical experience is preferred. A candidate who is experienced in IV, PCA, epidural, Central Line Drains and Wound Care, and chest drains is preferred. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is an asset.
