Staff Accountant – Canada
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to join our team. This role offers a blend of accounting, compliance, and operational support responsibilities, providing an prospect to contribute to the financial accuracy and efficiency of our Canadian operations.
This role will perform various tax filings and reconciliations as well as tax payments for Evonik Canada entities. The incumbent will be responsible to prepare and review general ledger account reconciliations and journal entries to support multiple Canadian and US legal entities of Evonik.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to Financial Reporting and Analysis
- Prepare and review account reconciliations ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with internal reporting standards.
- Analyze reporting line items to validate data integrity and ensure compliance with IFRS and the Evonik Reporting Manual.
- Post and review necessary account adjustments to support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
Support Tax and Compliance Activities
- Assist with monthly sales tax filings, reconciliations, and payments, including coordinating with the Shared Service Center (SSC) and posting payments.
- Prepare and reconcile tax-related working papers and assist with income tax prepayments, NR4 submissions, and other filings for Canadian entities.
- Collaborate with internal teams to troubleshoot and resolve invoice issues,
including cancellations or amendments as part of tax reconciliation efforts.
Provide Operational Support
- Assist with coding and processing of expense invoices for the Canadian entity, including telecom, courier, office supplies, and internal order billings.
- Work with internal systems such as IVT, SAP, and other tools to ensure accurate data entry and reporting.
Collaborate on Compliance and Reporting
- Provide guidance to Customer Service Representatives on Canadian commodity tax compliance and address related issues.
- Support various reporting requirements, such as Statistics Canada reports, and assist with government audits as needed.
Inventory and Administrative Oversight
- Monitor and maintain monthly inventory reports and reconciliations for various warehouses, assisting in resolving related discrepancies.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
Professional Accounting Designation will be considered a strong asset
5+ years of experience in corporate accounting; familiarity with IFRS is preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Hands-on experience with SAP
Experience using Microsoft 365 applications, including Teams and Outlook
Ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Self-driven with the ability to manage tasks independently
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
