General Description

nUnder the direction of the LSK Principal, the School Counsellor will lead the coordination of the comprehensive counselling program within the L’nu Sipuk Kina’muokuom (LSK) school, focusing on preventative and responsive programs and services. Consistent with LSK school policies, then

Guidance Counsellor will work within an established framework for the delivery of specialized services to students. Working collaboratively in a team environment, the School Counsellor will strengthen and contribute to the school improvement process in support of student learning and reports directly to the School Principal/Vice-Principal.

Responsibilities

n

- Provide individual and group counselling covering personal, social, emotional, and educational needs.
- Manage a comprehensive counselling program and evaluate the effectiveness of the program
- Build supportive climates for students and staff.
- Foster community partnerships and advance inclusive education practices.
- Exercise ethical decision-making.
- Identify resources and information related to assisting students.
- Implement the policies and procedures of LSK School and Sipekne’katik Band.
- Present to staff, school, and community groups.
- Plan and conduct professional development for staff.
- Apply a deep commitment to cultural competency, focusing on race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights, and diversity.
- Work and communicate effectively with the LSK School Administration, with students,

nparents/guardians, community members and external groups.n
- Engage in continuing education and professional development.
- Maintain and promote confidentiality.

Qualifications and Experience/Skills

n

- Must have a valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s Certificate
- Master of Education Degree in Counselling,



Counselling Psychology or equivalent

n(minimum 48 cred hours with courses related to counselling skills and practice)n
- Counselling practicum in school counselling or minimum of 1-year counselling experience in education (public, private, post-secondary)
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team and around children with various needs
- Proficient with Email and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Experience working with children or youth with disabilities or special needs.
- Experience working in a First Nations Community and Knowledge of Indigenous and/or

nMi’kmaw communities/organizations is preferred.n
- Have, or are willing to take, Standard First Aid and CPR-C as well as other ongoing related training.
- Physically able to manage dysregulated children who may be a flight risk and/or are unable to manage their physical responses.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a valid driver’s license & access to reliable transportation.
- A Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry check is required.

Working Conditions

n

- 5 days per week, Monday to Friday 8:15am to 3:15pm daily, 35 hours weekly
