Position: Commissioning Planning Lead
Contract: 1 year initially (extendable)
Location: Remote with Global Site Visits
Introduction
Brunel is currently seeking a Commissioning Planning Lead on behalf of our mining client for a remote position with global site travel. The Commissioning Planner is responsible for developing, coordinating, and maintaining commissioning schedules across multiple capital projects. This role ensures that commissioning activities are fully integrated into overall Commissioning execution plans and aligned with project milestones, construction completion, system and subsystem turnover strategies.
Under the direction of the Director of Commissioning, the Commissioning Planner will provide direct planning support to the project teams while also reviewing, and guiding EPC contractor planners to ensure accurate and realistic commissioning deliverables. This position requires strong schedule development capabilities, a deep understanding of commissioning processes, and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams in quick-paced project environments.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain detailed Commissioning schedules in Primavera P6 (or equivalent).
- Integrate commissioning sequences, system boundaries, and turnover milestones into overall project schedules.
- Track progress against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), critical paths, and commissioning readiness milestones.
- Conduct scheduling risk assessments and provide mitigation strategies.
- Perform other duties as requested.
- Ability to perform float, multiple float path, delay and time impact analysis.
- Monitoring performance and progress against baseline schedule and provide forecast on a regular basis.
- Review EPC contractor Commissioning schedules for logic quality, resource loading, sequencing,
and feasibility. - Provide feedback and required corrections to EPC planners to ensure compliance with Commissioning standards.
- Validate EPC progress updates and ensure accurate reporting of Commissioning progress.
- Coordinate closely with construction planners to align system and subsystem handover, mechanical completion.
- Support development of commissioning and system completion plans.
- Ensure commissioning deliverables (ITRs, turnover packages, subsystem boundaries) are aligned with schedule logic.
- Interface with Commissioning managers, Construction managers, discipline leads, operations, and start-up teams.
- Facilitate weekly commissioning planning meetings across projects.
- Prepare dashboards, progress summaries, look-ahead schedules, and management-level reporting.
- Support implementation of corporate commissioning planning procedures, standards, and best practices.
- Contribute to lessons-learned reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain schedule governance guidelines to ensure consistency across all EPC contractors and internal teams.
Requirements
- Experience in Heavy Industrial Construction and Commissioning/Start-up planning and scheduling
- Experience with construction and commissioning of mega projects.
- Skilled in related scheduling software (Primavera, MS Project, etc.)
- Bachelors degree in engineering, construction management, business or ten (15)
years related field in industrial project planning (mining preferred) OR High School diploma or GED and twenty (10) years of experience in industrial project planning (mining preferred) - Must be a proficient user of cloud-based Primavera P6 Scheduling software
- Possess excellent organizational skills
- Possess good communication skills and the ability to train others
- Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of heavy industrial construction and commissioning
- Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions
- Skilled in effective communication, both verbal and written, including the ability to actively listen and to adapt behavior and communication style based upon the audience
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Skill in following safety practices, and recognizing, controlling and/or eliminating hazards. Ability to build trust and credibility with employees/peers, and establish common goals and expectations
- Possess strong analytical skills
