The Health and Safety Specialist will establish a culture of Health and Safety through development, implementation, training, and maintenance of policies, procedures, and programs for all Ontario locations (fleet, plant, and office). This role supports operational managers and supervisors in establishing, enforcing, and managing safety initiatives and systems. The position reports to the Regional Health & Safety/Risk Manager. Responsibilities Support the ongoing implementation and maintenance of company-wide Health and Safety programs to improve reliability and content. Develop and effectively implement Health and Safety programs for all sites. Maintain accurate and complete records that meet regulatory requirements. Conduct audits on accident/incident reporting and implement action plans for corrective action. Manage Health and Safety data, including trend analysis and reporting of safety performance to all levels of the organization. Implement the Certificate of Recognition Program (COR). Effectively manage resources and applicable budgets.
Participate in and maintain Joint Health and Safety Committee activities. Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices through site knowledge, employee interaction, and site inspections. Provide recommendations for correcting safety hazards and unsafe work practices. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in Health and Safety with emphasis on emerging trends and practices affecting our industry/operations. Develop and deliver Health and Safety training programs for employees. Requirements 3–5 years’ experience in a progressively senior health and safety role; fleet safety and compliance experience is an asset. Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent experience and training. CRSP designation or in the process of certification is an asset. Strong knowledge of MOL and OHSA legislation. Experience managing staff and directing activities toward safety objectives/goals. Experience working with management in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Experience with safety committees auditing, training, and implementing best practices. Participation in Safety Groups. COR Program auditor/implementation experience is an asset. Proven ability to design and deliver safety training with strong presentation skills. Excellent command of English (verbal and written).
Strong MS Office proficiency (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience in the waste industry, transportation, or manufacturing is an asset. Location: Smiths Falls site with frequent travel to other Ontario sites and occasional travel to Manitoba and Saskatchewan; flexibility to travel is required. Compensation and Location Salary: $75,000 – $80,000 Onsite – South West Ontario, covering sites such as Sarnia, Waterloo, Oxford, Burlington, and Niagara.
