JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Fisheries Manager leads and oversees the Fisheries Team and provides strategic advice and support on a wide range of fisheries governance and co‑management initiatives. This role is responsible for advancing fisheries management activities and plans, including the development of stewardship plans, proposals, strategic initiatives, policy development, and project management. The Fisheries Manager also plays a key leadership role in supporting the development of a Mi’kmaw collective fishery focused on the implementation of a rights‑based fishery.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
Provides strategic advice and briefings to the Executive Director and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs on treaty rights‑based fisheries and livelihood and supports the implementation of the Fisheries Team’s strategic priorities. Represents KMK at community, provincial, and federal/territorial meetings and leads engagement with Mi’kmaw communities to identify fisheries‑related objectives and priorities. Develops and implements work plans, prepares reports and meeting agendas, participates in strategic planning, and works with the Communications Team on briefings, public information, and responses to media and community inquiries. Manages and supervises staff, including recruitment support, performance management, workflow oversight, and training, while fostering a positive and accountable work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Extensive experience in the fishing industry
- In-depth understanding of the issues and challenges facing the development of Mi’kmaw fisheries and rights implementation
- Post-secondary degree in marine studies, business, law, or related is considered a robust asset
- Prior supervisory or management experience
- Prior experience in negotiation work is an asset
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working partnerships
- Knowledge of political, legislative, and regulatory processes impacting First Nations fisheries is considered an asset
- Experience collecting and analyzing data, and conducting analysis for decisions and recommendations
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication, advocacy, problem recognition, resolution, and analytical skills
- Ability to prepare and deliver high quality project documentation and presentations
- Prior experience working with Mi’kmaw and/or Aboriginal communities and organizations is preferred
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must hold and maintain a valid NS driver’s license. Travel throughout Nova Scotia will be required.
