The Opportunity
The City of Selkirk is currently in search of an Urban Forestry and Horticulture Labourer to join our team for the summer. The individual will perform general labourer duties related to our urban forestry, horticulture, and naturalization projects and initiatives.
Job Duties
- Perform labour duties related to urban forestry, horticulture, and naturalization initiatives.
- Duties may include pruning trees and shrubs, tree removals, gardening tasks, watering plants and trees, weeding flower beds, waste removal, planting, and seed sowing.
- Carry out work within public parks, natural areas, playgrounds, athletic fields, municipal building grounds, and other green spaces.
- Safely operate a variety of hand tools and small equipment, including weed trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, chainsaws, pole saws, hedge trimmers, and other motorized equipment.
- Operate pick-up trucks, with or without trailers, to transport materials as required.
- Use technology such as computers, tablets, and cell phones to communicate effectively and complete minor administrative tasks.
- Utilize the City’s tree inventory software to conduct inspections and update records as trees are planted, maintained, or removed.
- Perform pre-trip inspections, routine checks, minor servicing, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
- Report maintenance needs or safety concerns related to equipment or vehicles to the Manager or Mechanic.
- Assist with training or supporting other employees as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class 5 or G Driver’s License
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, including understanding instructions.
- Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
Desired qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in forestry, environmental science, biology, agriculture, or horticulture
- Experience in horticulture, landscaping, forestry, or tree maintenance
- Experience operating landscape maintenance equipment such as weed trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, chainsaws, and pole saws
- Demonstrated ability to competently operate a pick-up truck with an attached trailer
- Chainsaw Safety Certification

This is for a Seasonal Unionized position ranging from May to August 2026. This chance is open to all applicants. This seasonal position is applicable to union dues but is not entitled to any benefits or entitlement under the Collective Agreement except for Article 24.
