The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge invites applications from internationally-based, world-leading researchers for the prestigious Canada Impact+ Research Chair in Environmental Public Health. The Canada Impact+ Research Chair program is a one-time Government of Canada initiative to attract leading researchers to Canadian universities to advance ambitious and transformative projects in Canada’s strategic priority areas. Impact+ emphasizes translation and real-world impact: Chairholders are expected to drive discoveries into applications and advance commercialization and social and economic benefits for Canada and the world, while also developing the next generation of highly qualified personnel. Impact+ Chairholders are appointed for 8 years, with the possibility of a four-year partially-funded extension, with award values of either $4 million or $8 million. We seek a visionary scholar whose work addresses environmental public health challenges and opportunities in natural and built environments. This position is part of the University’s strategic priority to expand its leadership in place-based, interdisciplinary health research. It offers the opportunity to contribute to regional and global conversations about disease prevention, protection against environmental health hazards, and the promotion of health and well-being. RESEARCH FOCUS The successful candidate will engage in research that advances understanding and solutions in one or more of the following areas: Emerging environmental health issues Climate change and planetary health Environmental health and public policy Community resilience and environmental justice Health impact assessment of living, working, and social environments The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and engage with local communities. We welcome applicants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including but not limited to health sciences, public health, Indigenous health, nursing, and environmental science. QUALIFICATIONS Only candidates who are working and residing outside of Canada at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply. Applicants must be full professors or associate professors expected to be promoted to full professor within two years of starting their appointment. Applicants from outside academia must possess the qualifications necessary to be appointed to these levels. Applicants must have a Ph.D.
or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the field of research. Applicants must have a strong record of research productivity and a globally competitive track record of research contributions in their field. In addition to demonstrated leadership and a track record of attracting and mentoring a diverse group of students and research personnel, applicants should have a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain an equitable and inclusive research environment. HOW TO APPLY Applications must include the following: A cover letter of application that identifies the area of Environmental Public Health that the applicant’s research aligns with, and the start-up funding, infrastructure, and space requirements. A comprehensive Impact+ vision statement and research plan, limited to 5 pages, that presents an overview of the applicant’s proposed research program, including strategies for knowledge mobilization activities, plans for securing external funding, and alignment with the University of Lethbridge’s research strengths. It should also address potential collaborations within the University, Alberta, and across Canada; highlight expected social and economic benefits for Canada; and demonstrate the program’s contribution to the national and international research ecosystem. A statement no longer than 3 pages outlining the applicant’s research mentorship experience, teaching philosophy, and their efforts to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and decolonization in their work. The statement should also include a plan for building and sustaining a diverse, safe, and inclusive core team and research environment. The names and email addresses of five potential arm’s length referees who are prepared to submit a letter of recommendation. The position will remain open until filled, with an initial review of applications scheduled to begin on April 1 2026. To meet Impact+ Program timelines, the University of Lethbridge must select and confirm the nominee(s) in advance of the registration deadline of June 15 2026, with a complete nomination package submitted to the Program by June 29 2026. Additional Information This position is contingent upon receiving a Canada Impact+ Research Chair through the program’s peer review process. Recruitment occurs in two stages: applicants must first apply to this open job posting at the University of Lethbridge. The successful applicant will be invited to submit a full application package to the Impact+ program, with substantial support provided by the University of Lethbridge. The results of the Impact+ application are expected in September 2026. The successful nominee must begin their appointment within 12 months of accepting the award and may join the University of Lethbridge as early as spring 2027. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Lethbridge Faculty Association Collective Agreement.
