Assistant General Manager

Duncan Garage Café & Bakery – Duncan, BC

Duncan Garage Café & Bakery is looking for an Assistant General Manager to join our leadership team. This role blends front-of-house management with operational leadership, helping ensure our café runs smoothly while supporting staff, customers, and the overall vision of the business.

We are a local, organic, vegetarian café and bakery that values community, sustainability, and respectful workplace culture. The Assistant General Manager works closely with the General Manager and owners to help lead daily operations, support staff development, and maintain the welcoming atmosphere the Garage is known for.

This is a hands-on leadership role: Someone who leads from the floor, supports the team during busy service, and helps keep systems running smoothly behind the scenes.

Leadership & Management

- Lead and support the front-of-house team during shifts, keeping energy high and service running smoothly
- Act as the shift leader, helping guide the team through busy periods with clarity and confidence
- Train and coach new team members with patience and explicit communication
- Foster a respectful, positive workplace culture aligned with the values of the Garage
- Troubleshoot operational issues as they arise and make confident, people-first decisions
- Handle customer concerns professionally with a calm, solution-oriented mindset

Daily Operations

- Support and oversee opening and closing procedures, including cash handling and till reconciliation
- Monitor service flow and adjust breaks, positions, and coverage as needed
- Maintain strong communication between front-of-house and kitchen teams
- Ensure cleanliness, organization, and health and safety standards are consistently maintained
- Restock supplies and help ensure the café remains organized and well prepared for service
- Support scheduling coordination and operational systems when needed
- Work closely with the General Manager to improve workflows, systems,



and team development

Operations & Financial Awareness

- Support the General Manager in monitoring daily operations and overall café performance
- Develop an understanding of the café’s profit and loss (P&L;) and how day-to-day decisions impact the business
- Maintain awareness of labour costs, product waste, and supply usage to help support efficient operations
- Assist with inventory management and ordering to ensure proper stock levels while minimizing waste
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support the long-term sustainability of the café
- Contribute to maintaining a profitable and well-run operation while upholding the quality standards of Duncan Garage Café & Bakery

Customer Experience

- Lead by example in providing warm, attentive, and thoughtful customer service
- Help maintain the welcoming, community-focused atmosphere that defines the Garage
- Address guest concerns professionally while ensuring customers leave feeling heard and cared for

What We’re Looking For

- Previous leadership or supervisor experience in a café, bakery, or restaurant setting
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both customers and coworkers
- A hands-on work ethic — someone who leads from the floor, not from the sidelines
- High attention to detail and the ability to stay calm during busy service
- Passion for hospitality, local food, and community-focused businesses
- Food Safe Level 1 certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Barista experience is a +
- Cooking and baking experiences are a +

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $50,000.00-$55,000.00 per year
