Director of IT / Network Architect (Remote)

Strategic Mandate: Empowering Technical Excellence

A primary objective for this hire is to provide a strategic leadership buffer for our high-level Technical Architects. We currently have "technical warriors" who are often pulled into reactive troubleshooting. You will provide the business oversight and leadership they need to remain focused on high-level architecture, effectively removing administrative "dead weight" and aligning technical operations with our rapid rural fibre scale-out.

Position Overview

- Role Title : Director of IT / Network Architect (Title dependent on individual skillset).
- Reporting To : VP, Network & Operations
- Location : 100% Remote across Canada.
- Travel : Occasional travel (1–2 times per month) to the headquarters in rural MB.
- Compensation : $100,000 – $130,000 base salary with an approximate 15% annual bonus.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Operations

- Implement the company’s telecom strategy aligned with business objectives while staying abreast of industry trends.
- Manage capital (CapEx) and operational (OpEx) technology budgets to ensure cost-effective infrastructure solutions.
- Oversee vendor and service-provider relationships, including SLAs and performance metrics.
Lead and mentor a technical team of 10–12 people, ranging from technicians to support staff and architects.

-
Technical Execution & Crisis Management

- Hands-on Mastery : Maintain the non-negotiable ability to "mash the keyboard" and personally solve complex network issues during outages—not just manage them.
- Infrastructure Oversight : Oversee the design, deployment, and maintenance of network infrastructure, including servers, voice/data systems, and internet connectivity.
- Performance Assurance : Collaborate closely with Network Engineering and Field Operations to ensure network maintenance and performance.
- The "Last Line of Defense" : Act as the leader who steps in during high-stakes crises (like DDoS attacks)

to resolve outages in minutes rather than hours.

Technical Expertise & Must-Haves

Industry Experience: 10+ years in Telecommunications or ISP environments.

Networking Core: Expert-level knowledge of Routing (BGP, OSPF), DNS, and Service Provider architectures.

Platform Knowledge: Deep familiarity with Cisco (ASR, Nexus) and Juniper (MX, QFX) platforms.

Protocols: Proficiency with MPLS, VXLAN, and Traffic Engineering.

Business Mindset: Ability to move from high-level strategic thinking to tactical execution.

Candidate Profile

The Ideal "DNA"

- Lead by Example : A "warrior" personality who thrives in high-stakes environments and prefers technical competence over layers of management.
- Anti-Bureaucracy : You value agility and technical mastery, and are a results driven individual.
- Resilience : You possess a broad range of experience, having battled critical outages and high-pressure situations in the past.

Nice-to-Haves

- Experience with rural fibre deployment.
- Advanced certifications such as CCNP, CCIE or JNCIE.
- Experience with Network Automation using Ansible or Python.
- Master of Engineering or a similar advanced degree.

Non-Starter Profiles

- Pure People Leaders : Candidates who are no longer "hands-on" or cannot troubleshoot the network personally.
- Data Center Support Only : Profiles focusing solely on traditional IT support without ISP-specific routing and scale experience.
- "Big Tech" Bureaucrats : Individuals who require extensive pre existing processes and protocols
