Job Summary:
The Cultural Support Worker / Cultural Connections Worker provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed support to Indigenous Elders experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. This role focuses on advocacy, housing stability, emotional and cultural support, crisis intervention, and community engagement.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the systemic barriers facing Indigenous Elders, including intergenerational trauma, housing insecurity, mental health, and substance use challenges.
Job Description:
- Direct Support and Advocacy:
- Provide one-on-one support to elders experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, ensuring their needs are met with empathy and understanding.
- Advocate on behalf of elders to access housing services, social programs, and community resources.
- Help clients navigate and access healthcare, addiction treatment, and other relevant services.
- Cultural and Emotional Support:
- Provide culturally appropriate counseling and emotional support that aligns with the values and traditions of the elders’ backgrounds.
- Organize and facilitate support groups or cultural gatherings to promote community and connection among clients.
- Offer guidance and support around coping strategies for managing addiction and stress.
- Crisis Intervention:
- Be available to respond to crises, provide immediate support, and coordinate emergency services as necessary.
- Work to de-escalate tense situations and provide a safe environment for clients in crisis.
- Outreach and Education:
- Conduct outreach to engage and build relationships with elders in the community, encouraging participation in available programs.
- Educate elders about available resources, programs, and rights related to housing and addiction support.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, support plans, and progress notes in compliance with privacy regulations.
- Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Work closely with other team members, including caseworkers, program coordinators, and health professionals, to provide comprehensive support.
- Participate in regular team meetings, training sessions, and workshops to stay informed about best practices and community resources.
- Program Development:
- Contribute ideas and feedback to help develop and improve program implementation and services.
- Assist in organizing events and activities that enhance community engagement and support for the elders.
This role requires a strong understanding of the unique challenges elders face, sensitivity to cultural practices,
and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and professionals in the field.
Education & Qualifications:
Required:
- Diploma in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Human Services, Community Support, Addictions Counselling, or a related field;
OR
- An equivalent combination of education, lived experience, cultural knowledge, and relevant community-based experience working with Indigenous populations.
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies, Psychology, or related discipline.
- Training in Trauma-Informed Practice, Harm Reduction, or Crisis Intervention.
- Cultural teachings, traditional knowledge training, or experience working alongside Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or similar de-escalation certification.
- First Aid / CPR certification.
- Deep knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices, traditions, and community protocols.
- Demonstrated connection to Indigenous community and culture (considered a solid asset).
