The Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board was established under the guidance of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement to be the main instrument of wildlife, fish, and forest management in the Gwich'in Settlement Area, Northwest Territories. Within the Gwich'in Settlement Area,





the Board has the authority to establish policies and propose regulations on the domestic and commercial harvesting of wildlife; commercial activities including for harvesting, guiding, and outfitting services; and hunting, fishing, and naturalist camps and lodges. The Board also approves plans for the management and protection of wildlife including:

the designation of conservation areas and species at risk;

interim management guidelines and park management plans;

regulations proposed by government;

rules and procedures for consultation; and

any matter in respect of wildlife referred to it by government.

Education and Experience

Mandatory:
Experience developing strategies and/or programs that address priorities and issues in a co-management (shared administration) environment in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and/or Nunavut;

Experience working with Indigenous groups;

Experience making resource management decisions that include science and the knowledge of Canada’s Indigenous peoples;

Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders with competing interests (government, industry, communities);

Experience with wildlife management in at least one of these areas: migratory birds, fish, or species at risk; and

Experience working as a member of a board, committee or council.

Assets:
Experience working in the Northwest Territories; and

Ability to speak, read, and write in the Gwich’in language.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Mandatory:
Knowledge of comprehensive land claims in the Northwest Territories; legislation on wildlife and wildlife habitat; and other applicable legislation related to Canada and Gwich’in land claim participants;

Knowledge of economic, cultural, and social issues facing Indigenous communities in the North;

Ability to anticipate and address issues that could impact the management and use of wildlife resources; and

Ability to work efficiently with colleagues in a board context.

Language Requirements
Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

All appointees are subject to the Conflicts of Interest Act. If you are appointed to one of these seats, you must be willing to travel across Canada, including travel to remote locations.

If you are appointed to one of these seats, you must be willing to participate for an average of 10-15 days per year in meetings, teleconferences, and travel time. The Board holds two public meetings per year in the Gwich’in Settlement Area. The Board holds several meetings throughout the year on an as-needed basis. The Board attempts to convene these meetings via teleconference, when possible and feasible.
