Steelhorse Freight Services Inc. is a leading western Canadian based independent deck transportation and logistics company with a proven 20 year record of success. We provide coast to coast service within Canada and between Canada and all major US markets with a current fleet of +/- 45 power units. We are looking for an energetic and experienced self-starter to join our team as an Operations Manager at our High River, Alberta location.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Vice President, the Operations Manager role is a senior level, full time, salaried position. The Operations Manager is responsible for organizing and executing operational fleet, driver and dispatch strategies to ensure the delivery of exceptional customer service,
optimization of company resources and achievement of corporate targets and objectives.
Key Responsibilities: -Provides the highest levels of service to all customers, whether internal or external, with the goal of continuously improving the customer experience and promoting the company image. - Promotes a culture where Health and Safety is the top priority. -Coordinates, plans and communicates available freight requirements to dispatch and/or sales brokerage team members to optimize fleet operations and best service client needs. -Proactively analyzes and initiates daily communication with drivers when necessary to ensure they are operating in the most safe, effective and efficient manner, are compliant with transportation regulations and company policy/procedures. -Solicits freight, develops successful, long term relationships with clients and provides clients with updates of freight movement status. -Coordinates, plans and communicates fleet tractor/trailer maintenance and repairs based on required company maintenance schedules and repair needs. -Trains, motivates, manages and evaluates assigned team members (dispatch, operations and drivers). -Identify and correct deficiencies, implement discipline and procedures with assigned team members. -Available on call after hours to address safety, driver and operational fleet needs. -Reviews driver payroll for accuracy and completeness. -Approves, plan coverage and documents driver / assigned staff requests for time off and other absences. -Enters orders and ensures accuracy of order entry to company standards by dispatch team. -Ensures that all permit and customs documentation is completed efficiently and accurately by operations/dispatch team. -Works with executive management to successfully implement and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) related to client, team and operational objectives. -Researches, develops and recommends solutions to meets customer requirements and improve service and operational standards. -Collaborates effectively with all team members and other departments to achieve daily objectives and corporate goals. -Operates in accordance with all corporate policies and procedures and all statutes and legislation governing the workplace. -Understands and adheres to all Transportation Safety Policies and Guidelines. --Maintain a safe, clean and organized work environment at all times. -Perform other related duties as required.
Key Requirements: - Minimum of 5 years of management or equivalent senior operational leadership experience in transportation, dispatch and/or logistics. -Proven experience and knowledge of full truckload and/or LTL Canadian/US Cross border shipments. -Experience with Flat and Step deck shipments. -Experience working with dispatch, company drivers, owner operators and 3rd party carriers. -Must have experience working with Truckmate or other Transportation software suite. -Team Player with a positive/energetic attitude who is a leader, reliable, takes direction, shows initiative and can work independently. -A natural desire to provide exceptional customer service and be a Steelhorse brand ambassador. -Strong and professional communicator in both oral and written English language skills. -Approachable, positive demeanor with a hands-on and team-oriented work style. -Analytical and logical thinker with the ability to effectively anticipate hurdles, adjust and prioritize operational workflow to ensure deadlines are met and goals are accomplished. -Confident and experienced user of Microsoft Office suite products. -Promoter of safety and teamwork in the workplace at all times. -High school graduate and legally permitted to work in Canada.
Other desirable skills: -Post Secondary education or certifications are an asset, but not required. -Oversize shipment experience is an asset. -Hand on Class 1 driving experience is an asset.
