Position Title: Manager, Library/Learning Commons

Location: Vancouver House

Reports to: Director of Information Services

University Canada West is a business-focused, independent post-secondary institution modeled after special purpose teaching universities as defined in the British Columbia Degree Authorization Act. Our mission is to deliver programs that provide students with the applied and theoretical basis for success in the workplace and future academic endeavors.

Reporting to the Director of Information Services, the Library/Learning Commons Manager will plan, promote, manage, and evaluate library services and resources to students, faculty and staff.

The Manager also supports the educational and instructional needs of students and staff and advises the Academic Leadership Team on planning and acquisition of library and instructional support resources. The Manager also coordinates education and support on Copyright matters to students, staff and faculty.

Specific Responsibilities

Serves as team leader for the UCW Library. Oversees the planning, building, and operation of library functions, services and resources, including the management of the Library and Learning Commons physical and virtual spaces:

- Provides direction for the library’s instructional strategy, and ensures its mission is aligned with the mission of the University and that of the Academic Affairs department

- Oversees the library team, currently comprised of 5 continuing full-time librarians, a library assistant, part time students and on-call professional librarians

- Hires, trains and manages library employees – including student workers, practicum/Co-op students or part-time/full-time librarians

- Provides oversight to the development of print and electronic resources according to program needs and strategic objectives

- Researches, develops and implements the integration of traditional and digital resource materials

- Prepares and manages library operational budget

- Liaises with other UCW departments to resolve issues in a timely manner and to uncover opportunities for improvement

- Manages the Library and Learning Commons spaces at Vancouver House and West Pender campus, ensuring a smooth operation for the two high profile spaces

- Negotiates copyright agreements and licenses and ensure copyright compliance and education

- Represents and advocates for the University at professional association meeting and activities

- Provides regular reports UCW community highlighting the work done in past terms and plans for library improvements in terms ahead

- Serves on committees and engages in special projects as required

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

- An ALA accredited Library Science Master’s degree

- Five years of library experience, preferably in an academic or research library

- Demonstrated knowledge of library operations; reference; circulation; collections; Internet and web services; and the role of technology in the delivery of library and learning services

- Experience hiring/supervising/mentoring employees

- Demonstrated understanding of information literacy and research support

- Experience in providing educational instructional support; experience with Moodle

- Extensive knowledge of library polices and best practices

- Experience managing operational budgets

- Demonstrate experience with diverse library technologies, experience with Sitka Evergreen ILS, SharePoint, EBSCO Discovery Service, Microsoft 365, etc.

- The ability to effectively and efficiently problem solve and implement creative solutions to emerging issues

- The ability to work under pressure and maintain a calm focus during busy periods

- Demonstrated data collection and analyses methodologies
