Job Summary

and how universities position their graduates for employment? Do you want to make a difference in Calgary’s economy? The Talent Specialist is all about growing Calgary’s talent pool while servicing both the corporate and educational institutions in our city.

This position is a key role within Calgary Economic Development’s Client Excellence team, supporting Talent processes for local companies, educational institutions, and prospective investors starting operations in Calgary.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Development/Relationship Building

- Proactively identify talent leads and opportunities

- Identifying and developing relationships with businesses and industry stakeholders

- Developing new lead sources through industry stakeholders

- Creating and delivering public presentations, networking and promotional activities identified proactively and responsively

- Working effectively with government agencies and stakeholder committees

- Support or lead client files as directed by Business Development Managers

- Support key sector initiatives as needed

- Recording and managing of activities in CRM


- Managing day-to-day client interactions and requests

- Proactively delivering presentations to corporations and stakeholder groups

- Proactively reaching out to new community stakeholders to increase our network and service offerings by establishing strong relationships in the ecosystem

- Providing direction to corporations in meeting their talent needs


- Gathering industry information and creating resources to share that information with internal and external stakeholders.

- Build and maintain a Talent tool kit and resources for the organization

- Actively communicating project successes with clients and community stakeholders

- Communicating upcoming opportunities for talent attraction and retention to community stakeholders

- Supporting talent round table and ecosystem initiatives Engaging with Calgary Economic Development’s Business Development Managers to develop plans to support the talent needs of each sector.

Strategic Planning

- Identifying ecosystems gaps and developing resources and programming to fill the needs.

- Creating annual action plans for Talent and revising as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements

- Support Director Client Excellence to determine and support CED’s strategic direction

You are collaborative and thrive in a fast-paced environment and can manage multiple projects with ease.


- Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Economics, Commerce, or Business Administration

- Economic Development education/training an asset


- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a related area during which professional capability has been clearly demonstrated such as a Talent, marketing, account management, recruitment, or sales environment

- Experience working within a professional organization and establishing key relationships with executives at large corporations, organizations or associations

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key Competencies:

- A proven track record in business client servicing and/or talent (HR) attraction related activities.

- Effective at working independently and as a member of a team with an ability to collaborate, seek input from and build a sense of team across business units

- Proven ability to identify opportunities and deliver timely results in a changing environment

- Ability to analyze information and make conclusions/recommendations

- Sound judgment and ability in handling matters of a confidential and/or sensitive nature

- Proven ability to learn new software, technologies, and processes as required

- Advanced skills with Microsoft PowerPoint presentation development and demonstrated extensive experience with preparing good quality slide decks within strict timelines

- Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is preferred

- Excellent oral (including presentation and public speaking) and written skills

Unique Working Conditions

This type of work doesn’t always happen between 9 and 5. This position may require long and/or irregular hours including attendance at business functions and special events. The successful candidate works effectively within a team environment and maintains composure when under pressure. The successful candidate must be able to balance and prioritize demands for information from a variety of sources, both internal and external, and deal effectively with politically sensitive as well as confidential information.
