Reporting to the Operations Manager, Applied Research within the Office of Research Services, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ORSIE), this position provides extensive project management, coordination, and reporting for applied research projects within the Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation, in a fast-paced, highly technical, and challenging environment. A multidisciplinary position with considerable complexity, the Project Coordinator, Applied Research exercises sound judgement and planning principles to coordinate the project planning phase for all applied research projects in development and in progress.

The incumbent will support the hiring and onboarding process for part-time research employees associated with ORSIE applied research projects, coordinates the effective operations of all ongoing applied research projects, and utilizes Records and Information Management (RIM) strategies, and tools to create and administer a variety of project records. Additionally, the incumbent provides promotion, event planning, and communications support to the applied research team.

Key Duties:

- Involvement in project scoping activities, including literature reviews in potential areas of project development.

- Organizing project kick-off meetings, ensuring that all project team members understand their roles and how the team is expected to function by holding regular progress meetings to review project status, timelines, budgets, and challenges.

- Providing guidance and support to teams on a daily basis to implement sound, ethical, and rigorous research plans and practices.

- Assisting project teams with reporting requirements, including documentation for in-kind contributions, receipts, and project reports.

- Monitoring and reporting on progress against established milestones utilizing sound project management principles.

- Managing and resolving conflicts and challenges as arise in a timely, professional and expedient manner.

- Consulting with their Manager to review project budgets in accordance with policies and procedures established by Durham College and the relevant funding body.

- Ensuring project teams are in compliance with other Durham College policies and procedures.

- Conducting project close-out meetings to ensure a satisfactory conclusion for every project, addressing issues pertaining to intellectual property, ownership of prototypes and the like.

- Collaborating and consulting with the Manager on unusual or complex matters.

- Maintaining appropriate service standards for external partners.

- Recommending follow-on projects to support business and industry partners or community organizations.

- Preparing regular reporting required by funders.

- Promotional activities such as website content management, social media campaigns, creation of a monthly e-bulletin, annual report, and the coordination of these activities with applied research partners.

- Event planning and coordination, including administration and backend support for online events across a number of platforms.

- Unlock ORSIE’s main doors in the morning and lock these doors at the end of the day in coordination with the facilities department

- Greet visitors to ORSIE at front desk, providing directions and/or contacting those employees who have guests, as required

- Responding to health and safety related concerns in a timely fashion.

- Responsible for picking up and delivering incoming/outgoing mail to College’s main mailroom


The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or Business Administration, with course(s) in research methodology and/or project management or similar. At least five years of experience is required, preferably working in the Information Technology sector or with advanced technologies for positions working with industry partners, particularly within an advanced technology adoption environment. Some experience as a Business Analyst is preferred. Sound knowledge of research design and methodology is required. Experience in intellectual property management, technology transfer, contract negotiation, technology development, and commercialization are strong assets.

Required skills include advanced skills utilizing project management software, such as Microsoft Project; strong critical thinking, judgment, interpersonal, organizational, planning, time management and prioritization skills and the ability to coordinate project deadlines and scheduling of resources; demonstrated strong business acumen and excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrates close attention-to-detail; effective communication skills to collaborate with faculty and administrative staff at all levels of the college, identifying needs and providing ongoing support; ability to be proactive in taking initiative, and identifying and resolving issues. The incumbent must possess the ability to work independently and as a team member, and maintain appropriate service standards for external partners. Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license and regular access to a vehicle.

Part-time support opportunity (classification): Regular Part-time

Hours: 24 hours per week (Monday to Friday); Shifts between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
