Your Opportunity:

The Peer Support Worker/Peer Specialist is an essential member of the Intensive Community Transition Team (ICTT). The ICT Team is a transformed, integrated, and recovery-oriented treatment team. Services are most often delivered in Edmonton's inner city, Community and Corrections Centers in partnership and collaboration with inner city shelters, agencies, centers and programs. The Peer Support Worker/Peer Specialist provides interventions and supports that are complementary to the work of Addiction & Mental Health providers by providing emotional and social support to others who share a common experience. Through the Peer Support Worker/Peer Specialist's own lived experience(s) with addiction and/or mental illness(s),

poverty (including homelessness) and experiences of recovery and resilience, the Peer Support Worker/Peer Specialist can authentically inspire hope and demonstrate the possibility of recovery. As a result, the client's recovery and personal life goals can/are integrated with the health care team's treatment goals. Clients are supported in being informed and activated patients with better health outcomes, improved quality of life and greater degrees of community integration.


As a Peer Support Worker, you will provide interventions and supports that are complementary to the work of a multi-disciplinary outreach team within Addiction & Mental Health. The team functions together to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support services for clients with addiction and/or mental illness. Through your own lived experience(s) with addiction and/or mental illness, and experiences of recovery and resilience, as the Peer Support Worker, you can authentically inspire hope to clients by sharing your recovery story, offering mentorship and recovery support; advocating for client needs; and supporting an integrated and recovery-oriented treatment experience.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Lived experience of poverty and experience in recovery from a mental health and/or addiction illness are required. Must be willing to share personal experience. Knowledge of systemic issues such as poverty, unemployment, stigma, medications and the isolation felt by individuals with serious mental health issues and their families is required. Involvement with local/emerging community of practice and with national peer support organization(s) are assets. Valid driver's license is required. An excellent attendance record and personal suitability must be demonstrated through your employment record and references. Vehicle required. Required to provide a vehicle for business use; along with acceptable driver's abstract and proof of business insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced knowledge and skill in the areas of mental health, homelessness and addictions. Critical thinking skills, working knowledge on the management of concurrent disorders is an asset. Strong understanding of client resources in the community and knowledge of concurrent disorders, and mental health legislation including Community Treatment Orders is an asset. Ability to work well in a team and seek consultation when necessary must be demonstrated.
