The Child Life Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a variety of therapeutic play-based interventions to support patient and family-centered care. Within the MRI department, the CLS will, in collaboration with the MRI team, help prepare the patient for their MRI procedure to ensure a successful exam and a better overall experience for the patient and family.
Here’s What You’ll Get To Do
Assess the developmental level and the psychosocial and emotional responses of a child to illness and the treatment or procedural process
Prepare children for medical procedures and provide interventions during procedures
Collaborate with families as members of the health care team, using the philosophy of family centered care and inter-professional practice. Work towards decreasing the patient and family’s anxiety by ensuring their understanding of the procedure at hand
Discuss sensitive and medical issues with children of various ages and developmental capacities
Develop and implement a plan of care to promote optimum development and maintain normal living patterns and experiences
Provide a variety of goal-directed play programs and opportunities for gaining a sense of mastery, self-expression, learning, and peer interaction
Provide a variety of tools to help distract the patient and reduce anxiety, either through images, tools or methods
Integrate research into practice and create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge
Here’s What You’ll Need
Pass the SickKids MRI Safety Course and personal MRI Screening to ensure personal safety within the MRI environment
Current certification with the Association of Child Life Professionals and designation of Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) credentials
University degree in a child related field (Masters in Child Life considered an asset)
Previous job-related experience with children/families with medical or special needs
Experience as a Child Life Specialist in a pediatric setting is preferred
Familiarity with the philosophy of family centered care and inter-professional practice
Demonstrated belief in life-long learning and an ability to cite evidence-based practice
Excellent problem-solving, communication and program development skills, and ability to work well as a team player
Employment Type: Full-time permanent - 37.5 hours per week
