Student Wellness Hub

Position Summary:

Join our team at McGill University Student Services as we expand and develop wellness services that support students where they live, learn and study. We are looking for health and wellness professionals with experience in holistic approaches, health promotion, prevention and early intervention. Our team includes client service specialists, counsellors, nurses, nutritionists, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and wellness educators, among others.

The expansion has included a major renovation of the Brown Student Services building, bringing together counselling, psychiatric and health services, health and wellness promotion and peer support.

The "Student Wellness Hub”—the centre of a hub-and-spoke model of care—provides a one-stop service area directing students to appropriate care. Beyond the hub, our services are even more closely linked to students and are embedded in faculties, residences, and other strategic locations to facilitate wellness where students live and learn.

The expansion is being funded by the generous support of the Rossy Family Foundation and McGill University.

In collaboration with the leadership of faculties & service units, the Wellness Advisor (WA) facilitates the conditions for student well-being where they live & learn. The WA identifies students who may require early intervention & orients them toward the appropriate service, intervention, or care adapted to their situation & reality. The WA will deliver faculty-tailored holistic wellness programming.

Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager Wellness & housed (embedded) in the partner unit/faculty, the WA:

Acts as liaison between the unit/faculty & Student Wellness Hub as well as other Student Services.

Identifies health promotion & other training needs for the unit/faculty & students.

As per the Student Services Collaborative Care (stepped care) model:

Delivers wellness workshops & support groups for students;

Acts as a consultant to faculty & staff on awareness, prevention, early intervention, & mental health related matters;

Conducts relevant trainings for students, faculty, & staff.

Conducts initial screening and assessment for students presenting with mental health and wellbeing concerns

Collects and reviews pertinent information/history, drawing on knowledge of mental health and counselling knowledge and skills when making an initial assessment through a structured judgment process.

Determines the need for emergent crisis intervention, facilitates urgent and non-urgent referrals. Initiates the Crisis Management Protocol, if needed.

Makes appropriate referrals to a variety of student support services across campus.Maintains up-to-date and comprehensive information on student services and community resources across campus, including faculty-based and central student services (e.g. referral, best practices, policies and processes, etc.) as well as community based mental health services.

Acts as a bridge to subsequent care; collaborates with referral sources as needed to streamline students’ access to support, including other mental health care providers, academic advisors, Enrolment Services Professionals, Residence Life Managers, Student Support Services Managers and the Dean of Students. Ensures the support & follow up of referrals.

Creates and maintains student records including assessments and referrals as well as appointment information in accordance to established standards, policies and procedures and the Collaborative Care Model.

Is a member of the Collaborative Care team in the Student Wellness Hub for the management of students with ongoing (mental) health concerns.

Participates in Student Wellness Hub & Student Services meetings & trainings.

Encourages & supports institutional policies that address campus wellness & provides strong advocacy for a prevention perspective, principals & values. Promotes to the campus community the linkage between wellness programming & student’s health status, well-being & personal / academic success.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or other psychosocial field, strongly preferred. Member of the OCCOQ or other professional order related to field of study, required. Professionalism, good organizational skills with an excellent attention to detail are essential. Must be able to contribute actively to a team. Demonstrated competence working with young adults. Proven planning and priority-setting skills. Ability to adapt quickly; must demonstrate flexibility in the performance of tasks. Student-focused and service-oriented with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships with all levels of staff, students and the public. Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to deal with confidential and/or sensitive situations with discretion, tact and diplomacy. Must be self-motivated, empathetic, approachable and self-directed with a demonstrated ability to take responsibility and deliver results with minimum direction and oversight. Experience in health promotion, awareness, & early intervention possessing a recognized expertise in youth mental health & emerging adulthood. Must possess a deep commitment to the principles and values of creating inclusive campus communities. Knowledge of student development theory, adolescent and adult development, key theories of intercultural communication and counselling and their application in post-secondary education, a strong asset. Training and experience in mental health assessment of a wide range of concerns that post-secondary student may experience. Expertise working with one or more specific student populations including international students, Indigenous students, graduate students or other marginalized student populations, an asset. Ability to navigate complex student situations, including crisis intervention. Ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives. Excellent presentation skills with a proven ability to communicate, both one-on-one and in a group setting, with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity in a cross-cultural environment to a diverse population. Able to support students from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience, formal training and previous work experience. Lived experience with diverse communities is a strong asset. Experience or knowledge of the field of Education an asset. Demonstrated skills in a PC environment using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and internet search engines. English and French, spoken and written.

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $64,210.00 - $96,310.00
