The Environmental Protection Specialist protects the environment by providing authoritative and expert technical advice to others on the Environmental Management Act and the management of industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials associated with complex, high-risk industrial sites and large local governments. As provincial experts in their sector or area of responsibility, the EP Specialist: leads regional and area-based EP planning,

developing systematic approaches, policies and regulations;  is responsible for coordinating the management of authorizations at high-risk, complex and unique sites/situations in the region; and conducts source monitoring and assessment to study impacts of toxins and wastes to lead compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment.  As the most senior technical expert in their field, the position provides authoritative technical and policy advice to ministry staff, elected officials, industry and municipal executives, other agencies, and the public regarding on controversial or complex waste management issues.  The position directly supervises other technical staff at the Officer, Technician and Technologist levels.

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:



- Master of Science degree in engineering, resource management, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and 4 years related experience in the field of waste management, or

- Bachelor's degree in engineering, resource management, environmental sciences or applied science in an appropriate discipline and 6 years related experience in the field of waste management, or

- Technical diploma in engineering, resource management, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and 8 years related experience in the field of waste management.

- Experience applying environmental protection legislation/regulations/policy.

- Minimum 1 year of demonstrated supervisory experience in planning, organizing, and coordinating a professional and technical workforce.

- Valid BC Class 5 (or equivalent) Driver's Licence.





Preference may be given for one or more of the following:



- Experience working for, or with, a regulatory agency responsible for waste management.

- Experience working for, or with, other types of environmental regulatory agencies.

- Experience with the interpretation and application of the Environmental Management Act.
