Your role

As a leader on the Digital Development team, you will manage the innovation program for the Digital Solutions team as well as an agile team of enthusiastic new grad developers and students. You will guide the team as they work with new technologies to provide innovative web and voice based solutions. This position is located at our One York location in Toronto and will report to the Director, DevOps, on the Digital Solutions team.

- Manage a design and development team with various skill sets (may include Java, .Net, React, UI, Mobile, Voice, CMS)

- Coach and mentor staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of professionals

- Effectively hire and retain talent while leading and growing the Digital Development team

- Promote a learning environment to develop team member skills that align with industry developments and organization goals

- Set performance plans and objectives that recognize talent and provides honest, direct feedback in a timely manner

- Build team agility by assessing and anticipating knowledge/skill gaps and driving knowledge transfer and/or skill development

- Work effectively with delivery representatives to ensure that the interests of direct reports and delivery objectives are considered in project/team staffing

- Your technical acumen will allow you to:

- Establish design and development practices, and evolve these practices to ensure compliance with audits and guidelines

- Lead development of practices within the Innovation portfolio

- Be involved in processes to define, implement, and oversee architecture engagement and governance to ensure consistent, high quality project delivery, portfolio stewardship, strategic alignment and innovation

What you need to succeed:

- A Post-secondary degree or diploma in Information Technology, or equivalent work experience

- 5+ years of experience providing direct and/or indirect leadership

- Within this role you are a recognized and practiced leader with the experience to drive our Digital Web design and development forward 

- Experienced in People Management - recruitment and selection, performance management, performance development and coaching, reward and recognition

- Strong leadership skills - comfortable managing a team virtually with multi skillsets

- A self-starter - able to contribute while influencing the technical direction

- Conflict and issue resolution and escalation experience

- Excellent communication (oral and written), facilitation, and presentation skills

Required skills:

- Software design knowledge and practice within the Digital Web domain. Application, data, security and infrastructure experience is desirable

- Integrating complex and unique program/projects with numerous technologies and platforms

- Previous experience with modern programming and development languages (for example: Java, C#, Python, React etc.)

- Experience with some of the following: participation in Hack-a-thons, a keen interest in Innovation and Artificial Intelligence, mobile application experience

- Agile experience is required

- DevOps experience is an asset

- Knowledge of Design Thinking principles

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
